Consumed at at Dieu du Ciel in July 2004
This is US batch #2, released in September 2005, but on tap for RateBeer in July 2005.
Poured with a huge fluffy head of light tan color, ice-cream texture and standing very tall. At first after the pour it’s a cascading gradient from the deep brown body of the beer to the light tan head at the top, but then it settles into a solid cake-like layer about 1/3 tall relative to the glass. The nose is intense sweet chocolate and espresso beans, creamy dark roast coffee abounding and just satisfying the senses perfectly. Unbelievable texture - frothy, thick, and extremely smooth, to the point that I can’t believe what I’m drinking. At times it reminds me exactly of warmed, melted ice cream with chocolate syrup. An amazingly complex bourbon and dark chocolate coating in the finish just sends this beer over the top. There is nothing about this beer that I could improve or want differently. It’s a different beast than others that I score very highly, such as Alesmith Speedway or Rogue Imperial Stout, but it’s no less perfect. Praise to the DDC brewer, this is one of the best stouts in the world. BeerPrince (1701), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Aroma is esspresso strength coffee with vanilla and some dark chocolate. When this first hits your lips its a blast of rich coffee. As it warms the roastiness comes out and the choclate kicks in. Finishes nice and thick with a beautiful hoppy bitter "come back for more" bite. Great beer. jimbowood (975), Athens, Georgia, USA

Really, smooth, drinkable beer. Coffee dominates nose and mouth. Subtel alcohol. REALLY GOOD! BELIEVE THE HYPE! Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

If this is "mortal sin", then is the woman with the snake in the picture Eve after the fall? Is that why she not naked? And how could a coffee stout be sinful? Why, they’re heaven on Earth to me!
But, I ramble...less thinking, more drinking, starting...now...
Decadent black sheathing, not a trace of light shining through....a solid crown of fluffy brown foam stands guard, like a mochaccino cap. Very nice.
Ahhh!!! Aroma reeks from the start withcocoa and espresso, riddled with earthy, bittersweet tones, redolent of richest chocolate, turning soft and creamy...very, very nice. I could smell this all day, etcetera, etcetera...
Over the lips and in the mouth, it’s beauty, indeed. Fills the entire orifice, and seeps into all the cracks and corners, spilling this dark deliciousness far and wide, reverberating long after the liquid has slipped down the throat. All those flavors in the nose resound and rebound, roasty malts and tingly hops conspire to create an exquisite sensation on the tastebuds. Though fully flavored, it’s never overbearing or unapproachable...though, clearly, enemies of stouts or coffee are urged to stay far away from the contents.
This is a sly and sophisticated thing, the 9% hiding well, the flavors resting happily, comfortably on the palate, long and wide. A beatiful beer, an excellent indulgence. And a rare one, as well.
Though, on reflection, the $16.59 I paid for this bomber could have got me a 6-pack of Bell’s Batch 7K. The price, and rarity, remains the only drawback I can think of, but I remain glad to have tasted it at last!
and, happily, this is a sipper, which means I get to enjoy it longer than other beers that slip down the gullet with more ease. I just might be set for the night. BigBastard (668), L.A., California, USA

Chocolate, coffee, vanilla, spices, toffee and mocha all wrapped up in the flavor. Chocolate becomes more pronounced as it warms. Extremely smooth. Very good. hopdog (5617), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA

Poured a dark black with a large sized brown head. Aromas of coffee, roasted malts, some chocolate, and some caramel. Tastes of coffee, coffee, some more coffee, roast, some dark fruits lurking in the background and caramel. Nice smooth body that is very easy to drink. Lacing left on the glass. Alcohol content hidden. I love coffee in my beers and this one does not let down. I have a bottle of Batch 1 in the cellar and am curious to see how it differs from this one. beanmedic (324), Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
