Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

22oz bottle/draft/12oz bottle. Pours a black body with a tan head. Aroma is loads of coffee, chocolate, some etoh. The flavor is incredibly well blended coffee and some smoke with a good roasted but creamy flavor of chocolate. I love this time after time. 4.3 After having the 04 vintage at the 10th anniversary party and IMO the f’in stand out beer of the party i have to bump this a few points, this beer is truely phenominal when served in this manner. The fresh 12oz bottles cant stand up to the aging process. Awesome! 4.6

Enjoyed a sample of this one from a 22 oz bottle, at Tasting in the Woods Part Deux. Pours to a beautiful, jet black color, with a thick and creamy tan head, and a moderate carbonation. The nose on this beer is fantastic with very fragrant dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla notes, and roasty notes. The palate is firm, with a slightly slick mouth feel. Lots of big dark malt, dark chocolate, vanilla, and roasty flavors coat the tongue. This beer finishes with more complex and delcious dark chocolate, coffee, and roast up front, then ends dry and roasty. Very impressive beer.

Thanks to RichLikeBeer! This beer was really good! Big coffee aromas mixed with the roastiness you would expect from a big imperial stout. The flavor is a perfect meld of chocolate, coffee, roasted bitterness, and a silky smooth mouthfeel that makes you almost feel like you are drinking a whipped frapachino (sp?). All of the different flavors balance perfectly with one another, and the alcohol is just right in this one.

Sampled a 660ml bottle from 11/04 at Monk’s in Philly. It could easily be argued that the mg’s of caffeine should be included on the label, right beside the ABV. I could smell the poured black beer sitting a foot or two away from it. Strong coffee aroma and flavor with a thin head. The alcohol was hardly noticeable and this one is a GREAT after dinner "apertif." Ironic that I found this in Philly the same day I flew back from Montreal and the Diue du Ciel, which did not have any (US only they said). A nice treat. Rerated on 2/3/06, bottle from 8/05. Ratings stand. Outstanding. Re-rate, Mar 07 (1.5yr old bottle from 8/05): just as fantastic as ever, truly a fantastic beer, although it is one dimensional. So very nice and holds its own (more of a desert beer, though) against Speedway and Mephistopheles batch 2 in this horizontal. Rerate (4/08) of 12oz bottles on separate days, once in horizontal alongside two vintages (08 and 07) of ST Jah-va and a KBS. Clearly the winner, excellent coffee depth and richness, yet finishing with a nice bitterness, a wonderful beer, albeit a one dimensional beer. ST just doesn’t have the coffee depth and richness and is also stickier sweeter.

2005 Bomber: Black with a beige head, good retention and lacing. Smell if lightly roasted coffee, a little bit of cream, some toffee and caramel. A really complex and wonderful aroma. Taste is incredibly smooth with light roasted coffee, cream, and some chocolate. Less than medium carbonation and heavier than medium body. Though the 2005 isn’t as good as it once was, it is still phenomenal. 2007 (rating below, not officially rating this one): 4 Black with a tan head. 6 Strong smell of burnt coffee and booze. 6 Old coffee, boozy, burnt caramel 3 Higher than medium carbonation and light body The 2007 was sampled side by side with the 2005 and they seemed like two completely different beers.

On tap at Max’s in Baltimore. Let me start of by saying WOW this shit rocks!!! Poured a deep dark black with an average light brown creamy head in a good sized glass chalice. This reminded me a lot of Founders BS but a little bit thinner and with a touch more carbonation. Aroma is chocolate, espresso, coffee, tobacco. The flavor is an awesome mix of coffee, espresso, tobacco and alcohol. I can’t say enough about this beer it is phenominal. Imagine drinking a chocolate fudge liquor sundae and thats waht this beer is.

Péché Mortel pours pitch black with a slow forming, thick, dense, lumpy, mocha-colored head that has outstanding retention and lacing. It has a strong roasted coffee aroma. It is full bodied and very smooth with a quick finish that kind of leaves the tongue in shock. It is well bittered and very roasty. There is a slight hint of sweetness, like molasses. It’s well balanced and warming. It’s not for chugging. It took be a couple hours to get through the glass.

Very dark black with faint ruby hues. On top sits a rich frothy brown head. Looks devilish. Coffee, of course, in the aroma, but tons of complexity as well. Molasses, chocolate, soy sauce, brown sugar, anise, brownie batter and very light alcohol. The taste is predominately coffee and espresso, but the rich flavors of roasted malts blends perfectly. Lots of molasses and bittersweet chocolate. The lingering alcohol burn in the chest is quite welcome. Overall this is fantastic, one of the best coffee brews to ever cross my lips.
