Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

This beer offers a hearty aroma of sweet coffee and almonds. It is a black solution that produces a decent mocha colored head and heavy lacing. This thick beer introduces itself with a healthy coffee taste that has infusions of nuts and malts. The taste fades leaving a mildly sweet smoky chocolate taste lingering.

#300 - 650 ml bottle bottled 11/04 - acquired via trade from hopdog - Thanks Steve!! The bottle foamed over the top when I popped the cap. That impressed me right away.. Pours black as night with an enormous milkshake like brown head that leaves a beautiful spiderweb lacing all the way down the glass. Aroma is burnt malts, some cigar smoke, and delicious coffee. A touch of chocolate, and a bit of vanilla can also be found in the nose. Flavor is amazingly complex and beautiful. First sip was mostly roasted malts, some smoke, and coffee with a good bitter edge and a nice warm alcohol feel afterwards. As I got deeper into the bottle it seemed more sweet mocha, vanilla, some molasses and a touch of raisin came through the coffee background but still it left you with mostly coffee flavor on the finish. On the palate this is smooth creamy and mouth coating.. I think it even coated my throat all the way down. Thick, almost like syrup. The alcohol can only be detected by the warmth at the back of each sip. If this is truly a mortal sin I’m glad to be going to hell! Terriffic brew!

Wow! I loved this - maybe a little too much - truly a peche mortel. Anyways, pours jet black with a tight foamy brown head. Nice coffee and tobacco aroma. Hits the palate firmly without overwhelming. All of the flavors meld together, chocolate, coffee, tobacco, a little citrus. Nothing predominates, it all subtly combine into something that seems big yet drinkable. A little lighter on the palate than I expected with maybe a little too much fizz. Otherwise - excellent brew!

The aroma is a deep rich roasted coffee. The appearance is a deep black with a long lasting tan head. Mortel’s flavor is a rich and robust roasted coffee. The mouthfeel is full and deeply satisfying.

Thick pour, black, with a slow-to-rise brown cap. Sweet coffee cake aroma, very intense! Palate is heavy and velvety, rich layers of sweet chocolate and strong french roast coffee. Finish is long, dry, and a little salty. Wow this is fantastic! Thanks for getting this to me Trev-- a fitting brew for my last Canadian beer for 6 months! Off to New Zealand...
