Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

2003 Bottle: Fresh coffe aroma emerges quickly on this one, turning woody and even to characoal as I swirled the glass. Jet black - like motor oil - with a tan head. Amazingly heavy, sweet deep roasted malt body giving off hints of black cherry, wood, chocolate and coffee. Espresso-like finish. Complex, but the coffee is countered and balanced with sweet flavors so this all comes together just perfectly. Slight boost of all the flavors from the alcohol, which is rather in the background. Thanks MartinT and tiggmtl for enjoying this with me. Can’t say enough good things about this beer.

22oz Bottle at The Moan and Dove. Official USA release party. This beer smells like a high end coffee shop. This thing is immensely quaffable. I sniffed this beer for about 15 minutes. It is truly a great aromatic beer if you like coffee. Pitch black with a small brown/tannish head that is smaller than I’d expect. Very roasty and extremely coffee-full. I cannot imagine the coffee flavors in this. It actually tastes more like coffee than beer. Alcohol in this? No way. No alcohol detected. Tastes just like an espresso that’s more cabronated and roastier. A truly unique beer. Is this a classic Imperial Stout? No. Will coffee-lovers enjoy this? Yes. Will non-coffee lovers enjoy this? That is to be determined. For me, this was a bit thin as well.-----DRAFT at DDC RBSG05. This beer isn’t as opaque on draft as it is in the bottled for. With that said, the aroma is still delicious and the flavor is a bit sweeter and not as dominated by coffee. On draft, this is full-bodied and very very very smooth. I did not re-rate this, but I’d give it 10/4/9/5/19 if I did.

Special thanks to Patricia for this draft sample: poured pitch black with a massive rocky brown head. Very strong coffee, cherry, chocolate aroma. Mild alcohol in the nose. Big roasted malt and coffee taste. There is no doubt this is a coffee stout. Light sweetness up front followed by the bitter coffee finish. This is the new batch (April 2005) and I must say it is excellent..

Bottle. Milk chocolate aroma with some richness. Pretty much completely opaque. Would be clear if you could see it. Huge rootbeer float head. Perfect appearance. Dark tan head. Unbelievably outstanding brew. Can tell there’s some alcohol but it is somewhat hidden. Smooth, but with a ton a flavor. Worth $17? If any beer is, this one’s close. Could they charge less? Yes, but by limiting production they increase demand and the high price makes people interested. It doesn’t appear they have any trouble moving it.

12oz bottle poured into a glass. This dark brown beer pours with a chocolate milk-looking head. The aroma is nice, rich and sweet with the expected suspects playing a prominant role along with something sweet like sugared prunes. The flavor is a wonderful arrangement of alcohol, coffee and dark malts. The body is thick and syrupy and refuses to let you forgot what you’re drinking. Many thanks to french tickler for this beer.

Wow great Imperial Stout. Am I dinking coffee or beer? Coffee, expresso, and maybe a hint of cherry flavor. Finishes creamy, rich, and crisp.

341 ml bottle. I gotta start by saying that I’m not sold at all to that kind of beer. I’m more of a belgian strong type of guy. But, this beer was exellent. Brown creamy head, dark brown color and strong coffee/malt aroma. Taste of coffee, chocolate, roasted malt. Alcohol is very well hidden under all those well balanced flavors. A pleasure from beginning to the end. Really worth the extra bucks.
