Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

bottle bought at charles st. liquors in boston. fully carbonated with a monstrous ocean-foam head. quite bitter coffee aroma, with some reddish strawberry-like fruits hidden in there. super smooth velvety body, perhaps thanks to the high level of carbonation, but also perhaps to a lot of residual caramel sweetness and starchy oatmeal. less coffee in the taste than in the smell. lots of people have said "overhyped," but i disagree, the hype is mostly true. it is, however, overpriced--designed to be a rare treat.

Pours dark as tar with a huge creamy head. Lots of coffee in the nose with sweet cream as well. As much coffee as I’ve ever had in beer, which fortunately I love. Dark figs linger at the end, with a wonderful finish which is just long enough without being too much. Beautiful beer.

Pours a beautiful black body with a thick frothy light brown head. Very full strong roasted coffee aroma, almost burned with some bitterness from the roast. Hints of alcohol. Flavor is dominated by coffee, coffee and coffee, dark roasted almost biding. Vague hints of chocolate in there also. Pretty sharp and bitter behind the stout sweetness. One dimensional, but what a dimension it is! If you like stout and coffee (which I do) this beer is something for you! Need a little more body/smoothness to be world dominating!! Thank you so much Rich (richlikebeer) for going through so much to get me this one!

Tap at the brewery. Black pour with a thick creamy tan head. Aroma is loaded with rich coffeeish character. Dark, well-extracted expresso, crema and a real espresso roastiness. Light cocoa and coffee. Very rich deep cocoaish malts. The body is thick and unctuous with an excellent balance of sweet chcocolate and coffee. It’s not vegetal at all in this incarnation. Strong roasty finish with a kiss of vanilla and a lingering dry roastiness on the back. Much, much, better than the bottled version. Bottle Deep brown beer thick brown head. Massive coffeeish aroma leading caramel/toffee sweet malts. Creamy texture, loads of coffee, roast, over a chocolate maltiness. The flavour seems a little bit vegetal and the beer is a little bit peppery as well, but as it warms it comes a bit more into balance. Really massive brew.

66cL bottle...thanks Marc! Label says 9% ABV. Very dark color and a really nice big head. Coffee aroma with malt and just a touch of heat from alcohol. The flavor is very roasty, coffee, bitterness, malt, some sweetness but it is mellowed by the bitterness and the heavy coffee component. Delicious on the palate with a medium to heavy body. It’s not the thickest of Imperial stouts but it certainly is a nice, big, roast imperial stout that has no flaws. The only downside is the price.

I think I’m too generous sharing this w/ Blake and Dave... screw you guys :) bottle was a gusher.. just kept slowly fizzing this nice brown foam out the top of the bottle and it tasted so good like good coffee w/ alcohol. Pours a very dark jet black w/ a huge huge thick tan/brown creamy head that laces sooo well. Smell is HUGE HUGE coffee big roasted malts so roasty and nummy smelling. Theres so miuch coffee and num and a touch of smokiness. The palate is nearly over carbonated medium body and decent creaminess. The flavor finishes w/ a big warm glow so the alcohol is definately present. The flavor is mostly a big roasted coffee bean hints of smokiness to it and almost a burnt malt at some point or another. The flavor is reminiscent of some starbucks I had the other day served up by the cutest lil thing :)... very big coffe maltiness. This was a damn good beer thanks axilla for a great trade.

Aged for 10 months. Poured pitch black with a dark brown head. Aroma was coffee and earthy clay notes. Flavor was pure coffee. I could tell the coffee had mellowed from aging. I can’t wait to get a fresh bottle of this and get smacked in the face. Even with the aging the coffee was still ridiculous. Smooth with a great malt body.

Very dark black colored brew. Strong aroma of coffee, espresso-beans, roasted malty goodness :) Flavor is very well balanced if you let it rest for a while. Smooth coffee flavor with some chocolates and other roasted malts. A bit creamy even. Very good warming mouthfeel. Very nice.
