Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Bottle. Clear dark black color with a large, frothy - creamy - rocky, excellent lacing, fully lasting, light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, nutty, dark storn coffee, coffee bean dusty, dust, light alcohol. Flavor is heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration and a dry dust finish. Body is medium to full, texture is creamy - oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is moderate alcoholic. Very nice ;o)) (120308)

2005 bottle (thanks Secret Santa!!!) shared with puzzl. Black body with nice dark tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, and black cherries. Flavor starts out with heavy bitter espresso that is balanced nicely by some sweet cherries and chocolate. Finish is a little bit sticky, but overall a delicious coffee stout.

Bottle pour. Incredible coffee aroma. Beautiful lacing and carbonation. Strong espresso initial notes and subdued/sweet/balanced finish. Not to bitter aftertaste. Overall an excellent imperial stout.

The aroma of this beer is in itself complex. First a strong coffee aroma is present and then chocolate and caramel smells waft through the air.The smoothness of this beer is wonderful. Not many stouts, especially this flavorful, are so palatable.

Bomber, bottled on 08/05, with a giant THANKS to hopdog! Pours a dark black with a fizzy tan head that drifts to a thin covering, minimal lacing. Strong aroma of espresso, fresh roasted coffee, and some slight bittersweet chocolate. Flavor is like drinking a well done espresso from a very fine bean blend - lasting and bitter enough to get your attention without killing your tastebuds. Palate is medium-full and creamy with moderate carbonation and a bitter, lasting coffee finish. The description on this beer is very fitting - "...this beer is all about coffee", "...no brewer has ever married coffee and beer so seamlessly". True and True! Thanks again Steve for giving me a chance to try this rarity!

2004 bottling courtesy of matta. Thank you, sir.

Been wanting this one for a very, very long time. Black, inky, dark as hell pour slugs out of the bottle. Huge dark mocha head forms immediately, and doesn’t budge. Sheets of lacing adorn the sides of the glass once the head finally decides it’s had enough. Nose is huge, and almost all coffee. Fresh ground coffee, espresso, chocolate, dark malts and fruity esters and some licorice as well. Smells fantastic, and I’m not the biggest coffee lover in the world. In fact, I never drink the stuff. But this has me enamored. Flavor profile is dead on to the aroma, huge amounts of everything that was promised, if only a baby step below the aroma in terms of intensity. Full, viscous body and mouthfeel, very chewy and formidable. Super long finish makes it seem like I’ve been drinking coffee non-stop all day long, with hints of chocolate and fruits as well, and maybe the smallest amount of vanilla. World class.

2007 bottling courtesy of Gillard. Thank you, sir.

Much more abrasive than it’s aged brother, but still a good beer, just needs time to mellow.

Bottle: Shared by glouglouburp @ DLD...big thanks man. Black pour with a minimal tan head. This is just ridiculous...huge espresso and fine dark chocolate nose with some dark malt notes. So well balanced, yet still had the most insanely wonderful coffee taste that I’ve ever had in a beer...some mild chocolate and tobacco notes present as well. Slightly dry, full-bodied mouth feel.
