Been wanting this one for a very, very long time. Black, inky, dark as hell pour slugs out of the bottle. Huge dark mocha head forms immediately, and doesn’t budge. Sheets of lacing adorn the sides of the glass once the head finally decides it’s had enough. Nose is huge, and almost all coffee. Fresh ground coffee, espresso, chocolate, dark malts and fruity esters and some licorice as well. Smells fantastic, and I’m not the biggest coffee lover in the world. In fact, I never drink the stuff. But this has me enamored. Flavor profile is dead on to the aroma, huge amounts of everything that was promised, if only a baby step below the aroma in terms of intensity. Full, viscous body and mouthfeel, very chewy and formidable. Super long finish makes it seem like I’ve been drinking coffee non-stop all day long, with hints of chocolate and fruits as well, and maybe the smallest amount of vanilla. World class.
2007 bottling courtesy of Gillard. Thank you, sir.
Much more abrasive than it’s aged brother, but still a good beer, just needs time to mellow.

This is just ridiculous...huge espresso and fine dark chocolate nose with some dark malt notes. So well balanced, yet still had the most insanely wonderful coffee taste that I’ve ever had in a beer...some mild chocolate and tobacco notes present as well. Slightly dry, full-bodied mouth feel. joe1510 (501), Illinois, USA

Bottled 3/2005
I bought this bottle about one year ago and have cellered since. This bad boy hasn’t lost any carbonation in the 2+ years since bottling. Opens with a nice pffftt and pours black as the devils soul. This black hole of a beer swallows every ray of light that dares venture near. A two finger creamy brown head appeared on the pour and became craggy before slowly falling to a thick crown. Leaves some great sheet lacing as it settles and then after each drink. World class looking stout.
Although this beer is a couple years old the coffee is by far first and foremost in the aroma. There’s not just a hint of coffee here and there but a couple shots of espresso. The espresso still dominates. Once I get past the coffee there’s a solid dose of dark chocolate with a slight bitter character and roasted barley. Peche Mortel is one of those beers that get your heart beating faster from the first inhale.
Well, the flavor manages to outdo even the aroma. This is a coffee bomb yet somehow, as strong as it is, doesn’t overpower you in the least. While the coffee shows off it’s greatness throught there’s a great wave of dark chocolate on the swallow. This manages to balance things out perfectly before the espresso takes over the entire profile. Roasted barley makes itself known quietly in the background.
The mouthfeel is perfect on this beer. The body is big boned but not heavy which makes this beer go down incredibly smooth. The carbonation is actually slightly higher (moderate in this case) than expected which keeps things moving nicely.
I find it extremely hard giving such a big stout a perfect score for drinkability. While this is about as close as you can get for such a big beer the alcohol and caffeine keep it from getting that 5. If you drank the night away with this beer you’d be bouncing off walls one minute and falling asleep the next. Well, maybe not but you catch my drift right?
Peche Mortel is a stout of the highest quality. I don’t drink coffee very often but I love me a good coffee infused beer. This is one if not the best coffee infused beer I’ve ever had. Not only that but it’s one of the best stouts I’ve ever expierenced. I only wish I had a few more bottles sitting aside. This is a must try lie, cheat, or steal do whatever it takes to get yourself a bottle of Peche Mortel.

The aroma on this was an absolute JOKE. Are you kidding me with that? I had a good 20 minutes with the snifter before I was ready to take a dive. INSANE. This goes way past the aromas described below - add in a huge dose of vanilla and rich blueberry. The aroma was the shining star - unfortunately, the taste was overshadowed and did not live up the the epic smell. It was missing the rich, elegant, full bodied, complex elements shown in aroma. I have to agree with the H-Deuce on that one. Ah well. Overall, enjoyed to a great extent, however, the knock on the flavor kept this a touch short of top notch. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, coffee, dark fruit and roasted malt. Flavor has the same elements, but also liqorice. Some bitterness in the aftertaste. Lovely imperial stout! | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 19, 2008 Deep black pour with large tan head. Aroma is a wonderful sweet almost milky coffee... reminds me of a coffee milk shake. Under the rich coffee aromas are hints of chocolate, wood, and a hint of cinnamon as it warms. The aroma is so rich I dont even want to start drinking right away. The flavor does not dissapoint at all. Starts off with a pleasantly bitter big coffee with some assertive hop bitterness, mildly piney. The flavors transition to a more milk chocolatey note toward the middle. The finish lingers quite a while developing into a pleasant mild roasty flavor. Truly an excellent beer. MrStitch (138), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 4, 2008 Bottle. Thanks to Linus_Stick for sharing this one. Pours a thick oily extremely dark brown, with a thin as velum tan head. Aroma is thick... filled with roasted coffee beans, 75% dark chocolate, cream, and roasted malt. Taste is sticky and bitter up front, then fades into a sweeter malt and choclatety flavor. Mouthfeel is smooth and soft with a light sticky residue left behind. An excellent beer that should be tasted by all.
