Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Taste 7/8 bottle(date on bottle not marked) Looks: Dark opaque brown with a thin yeasty clinging head. Aroma: Roast, mocha, freshly ground coffee. Taste: Full flavored coffee with acidity. Mild hops spice, felt along with the alcohol. Very smooth. Really nice, no unneeded flavors. Great for coffee fans.

Draught. A beer does not, could possibly not be more beautiful than this! Best lacing EVER. Black body with a mocha head and black roasted coffee bean aroma. Pure, unadulterated coffee blended with dense mocha delight and a hint of cherry. An absolutely splendid drink worthy of the gods.

Bottle. Jet black pour with a very small frothy head. Aroma FULL of Dark, dark chocolate and heavy, rich, black coffee. Upon tasting I was absolutely delighted that a "stout brewed with coffee" finally delivered! Thick and delicious! Think of oily, cold-press coffee, that isn’t cut with water. There’s just not some coffee hidden in the background, this beer has coffee featured at the forefront, they way it should be. Very happy and impressed. It lived up to the hype, and is one of the best coffee beers I have every had.

Excellent stout, poured black with a thick lacy brown head. Smelled of excellent coffee/espresso with some sweet chocolate/sugar backing it up. Tasted of strong and excellent coffee beans, alcohol is present but adds more than detracts. Very thick and full of flavor, an excellent coffee stout!

Bottle. Wow. Pours a thick, viscous, oily black, with a presistent and lacy dark tan head. Big cappuccino aroma, with roasted barley, chocolate, fruit, great! Palate was both intense yet surprisngly drinkable. Huge coffee throughout, with more complexity than I would expect from even the best cup of coffee. Just floored me.

My mouth is a coffee bean roaster. A dark black beer with little to no head. Aroma of roasted, alcohol, & coffee beans. The taste is roasty toasty coffee beans, & bitter. It is like your mouth is a coffee bean roaster. Like tasting coffee without much sugar because in no way is this beer sweet. What I find so good about this beer is not that it tastes like a coffee drink but you can taste the beans in a nice raw sort of way.

Original review date 6/13/2008... Awesome, thick banana nut bread head. Lacing starts nicely. Huge espresso-roast body. This looks awesome. Vibrant coffee notes with huge malt and grassy hops - a little BBQ char and some residual sweetness of cinnamon sugar. Very well-blended roasted malt with strong coffee component. Alcohol is present but lifts overall flavor profile nicely. Very strong bitter coffee with grassy hops - similar to nose. Nice stuff. Velvety, coaty, warming stuff. Coffee strong on finish. Excellent. Nicely drinkable for style - still a sipper.

Bottle - pours jet black with a thin coffee coloured head. Aroma is rich dark chocolate and coffee. Flavour is rich chocolate, coffee, with a sweet note - very smooth and thick. Slightly bitter finish. Absolutely wonderful stout.
