Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

11.5 oz. Big, lasting cappuccino foam on this black beer. Aroma is espresso and the just-brewed grounds, and some char. Flavor is mocha with extra dark-roasted coffee, brown sugar, a touch of cream, char, chicory, caramel, and slight metallic herb. Later some cured tobacco. Large body is smooth, sticky, lightly tingly, and just dry enough. Very nice, but for the price ($5.50/single) there are several others more worthy.

12oz bottle from new beer distributors in manhattan. dark brown color with a medium pillowy brown head that stick around. roasted coffee and chocolate aroma. expected coffee flavor with a moderately bitter ashy aftertaste. also some nuttiness in the taste. palate is medium to thin - but is still creamy. as a coffee lover, this one was right up my alley. K-8

Bottle. (Bottled on Nov. 7th 2007.) Many, many, many thanks to tronraner. I wasn’t able to visit Montreal during the winter season, as my original plan. I was bummed. So, I am extremely grateful for this moment. The pour is quite opaque with hints of light passing through around the thinner edges creating a burgundy hue. The head is a long-lasting tan head that creates decent lacing. The aroma is very roasty in coffee as well as strong hints of molasses and toffee. There are some slight sour and tangy notes. The mouth-feel is very viscous with some fine carbonation and slight oiliness. The flavour, wow... it’s packed with coffee and lightly sweetened cocoa. Toffee is pretty predominant as well. The tanginess is much more subtle in the flavour than it was in the aroma. The finish is very smooth and slightly bitter. Coffee and cocoa flavours linger for quite some time. Overall, this is very balanced. It’s very delicious. Ah, this is quite amazing.

Yep, this is coffee beer alright. Deep dark pour with bubbly dark tan head. Hit the spot when I was fading last night. Best word to describe it is bitter. Bitter in a good way. Coffee grounds and intense dark chocolate on the nose and on the palate. Somehow still a bit sweet, hitting more on the back of the palate. Almost a burnt brown sugar/syrup aftertaste. A little good must, too.

12 oz bottle. Poured as black as could be, thick, like motor oil thick. Nose was huge, coffee, vanilla, chocolate. Taste that followed was similar. This beer is the real deal stout, delicious and so drinkable. Top notch beer

Wow. I absolutely adore coffee beers, and this one wins for the BLACKEST coffee taste. A ton of espresso. (Pisgah Valdez still wins for most coffee taste.) A bit too much carbonation, as it stings a bit on the tongue. Maybe a good thing with all the dark chocolate (DARK) and coffee taste. The sweetness has no chance against this bitterness, and the aftertaste goes on for days. Just breathing in and out after you take a sip brings you happiness. Maybe a bit much for

Bottle from Parti-Pak Liquors (Indianapolis, IN). Pours a murky dark brown to black with thin tan head. Aroma is slightly musty with notes of roasted coffee, chocolate, some faint caramel and toffee sweetness. Flavor is malty and roasted with notes of coffee, chocolate, toffee, raisins, some ripe dark fruits, caramel and hints of molasses. Generally full body with a pleasing roasted coffee finish.

smells like barbecue, acrid burnt wood, coffee, cigarette butts, but not in a bad way... absolutely opaque brown with a small beige head. woah, intense flavour and feel, body like turkish coffee dregs, taste is burnt malt, coffee grounds, just a powerful taste, interesting tangy hopping and black licorice. awesome
