Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

Bottle.
Pours with a no-light dark body with an olive green head and a straight-up, no foolin’ unground coffee bean nose. Flavor is deep, unfiltered black coffee with a chocolate malt backbone. Superb mouthfee; thick, coating and unforgettable. This isn’t a beer; it’s an alcoholic chocolate milkshake.

[Several snifters @ the brewpub] Pours beautifully: thick, dark brown in color, with a super-dense tan head. Massive coffee aroma with chocolate and dark roasted malts. Flavors back up the aroma very well-- very fresh, French roast coffee, sweet milk chocolate and vanilla bean. Extremely smooth for a beer of this strength, this reminds me of a sweet mocha coffee drink, in a way. Kind of one-sided, yes, but what really gets me is the way the flavors all meld together. Complex flavors continue to develop as you travel down the glass. Wonderfully smooth mouthfeel. Drinking this fresh on tap really was an amazing experience. An incredible beer!

Thanks to richlikebeer for sharing! Pours a dark brown-almost black. Small tan head. Strong, powerful coffee aroma. Taste is almost black coffee, with some molasses, with some roasted malts. One of the best I’ve ever had!

Bottled in 11/04: The initial pour goes into a large tulip with about an inch and a half of foam. The head leaves clumps of lace on the sides of the glass. This beer mantains a fifth of an inch of head throughout the session. The nose is one of coffee and roasted malt. This beer tastes of coffee above all else. I like my coffee as Ilike my beers, that is fully flavored and over the top. I detect more chocolate flavor as I progress through the bomber. This is beginning to look more and more like a frothy cup of coffee. It tastes not just as though someone put 2 packs into the coffee maker; it tastes of gourmet coffee. I deduct a half point only because this brew is one dimensional in flavor. Its mouthfeel is that of a rootbeer float with lots of melted ice cream in it. It is simply world class. The drinkability is good for the style. I have drained this bottle with efficiency but would certainly not drink another in the same sitting. If you find a bottle for less than $20, consider yourself lucky and buy every last one of them.

On CASK at Dieu Du Ciel Brewpub. Ok, wow, on CASK!?!? Awesome! 2 inch thick brown/beige head. Aroma is a a coffee punch in the face, but there is also LOADS of chocolate, and some roasty malts. mouthfeel is thick, and viscous. Flavour is so nice and balance between the coffee, and the chocolate, and the bitterness in the finish is there, and its not harsh at all, a nice compliment to the coffee. Talking with the bartender, they call this beer their "legal drug" and i second that!

Bu sur place (12 oz). EN FIN JE L’AI BU! Noir, noir, noir. Collet riche de couleur beige. Arome fort de grain de café fraichement torrifier. Superbe goût de café corsé, avec un peu d’amerturme.

I’m really pumped that I can now buy this beer in my local dépanneur because this may be my favorite beer, or at least my favorite stout. It pours black and leaves a small dark brown head. So much flavor you can taste it before it touches your mouth. Great brew.
