Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

One of two 11-04 bottles to appear at the post-Dark Lord tasting at the Hampton. Tried side-by-side with Speedway, and it didn’t stand up so well. Aroma: Coffee Flavor: Coffee. And as others have said, the alcohol is totally undetectable. This could pass for ice coffee in beer form. If you’re the type that seeks out fine coffee, this is for you. If you’re into a fine imperial stout with some coffee, there are better options. Hopefully the next batch better represents what the tap version of this is supposed to be. RE-RATE 2/14/2006: I was fortunate enough to get my hands on three snifters of this off of the Tap at The Blind Pig Co. in Champaign, Illinois. Poored a coffee black with a creamy khaki head. Much more going on in this batch, off tap. The coffee nose adds an element of sweet cream. Coffee still dominates the flavor, but the flavor is more rounded, with dark chocolate elements, a subtle sweetness lingering underneath. And the coffee is a better tasting coffee. Not necessarily a Top 10 beer, but certainly a worthy comparison to Speedway and Breakfast Stout.

Bottle shared with kleyland. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it sitting on the shelf at Green’s. Pours a dark black color. Thin, light brown head. The aroma is 100% coffee. Creamy body. Flavor is rich, roasted coffee. Just a delightfully delicious beer.

Pours a opaque brown/black with a nice dark head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and is sweet. Flavor is of a blend of caramel, chocolate, coffee, dried fruits, and is very sweet at first with a very bitter and pleasant clean and crisp finish. Excellent beer.

Pours a rather opaque black color with a thick and creamy tan head. Great lacing. Aroma is at once strongly alcoholic and full of dark-roast. I also picked up notes of brown sugar. Rich and slightly chocolatey coffee flavor is a true joy to sip on. Coffee lingers for minutes on my tastebuds after every sip. A slight overcarbonation keeps the palate from being perfect but doesn’t really hinder my enjoyment of this beer. I highly suggest that people send this beer to me daily so that I can further analyze it.

Bottle. A black beer with a nice brown head. Aroma is coffee all the way with some roasted malts in the background. Flavour is cold espresso with chocolate, vanilla and caramel. Its fantastic. Very creamy cocoa like palate. I need more of this.

Courtesy mcbackus. Poured black with a light tan head. Great aroma - strong bitter coffee and roasted malts. Quite a different scent than most other coffee stouts, but I can’t quite say how. The taste is smooth with the coffee bitterness and roastiness building up to the finish, which is super dry and holds a lot of coffee taste. One of the better coffee stouts I’ve had. Thanks Matt!

Bottle. Strannge but interesting label. Creamy high light brown lasting head leaving nice curtains. Body blacker than pitch black. No light allowed through here. Coffee aroma it is indeed. Flavor not surprisingly also coffee with a mild and smooth mouthfeel, fair amount of hops bitterness lwo carbonation and a long aftertaste. 9.5% alcohol very well hidden. Man its good.

On tap at Deep Ellum. Black body with dark brown chalky hues at the edges. A dark tan head that is both creamy and loose seals in all that coffee goodness. Nose is roasty and full of espresso notes. Flavors of dry dark chocolate, rich oily espresso, some hazelnut and lots of chewy thick malts. The bitter coffee flavors are really strong and welcoming and the sugars seem to dry up at the end of each sip. The only knock I have is that the pallate falls a little short. It gives up and doesn’t have that sharp espresso bite that challenges my tongue. Would I like this beer more aggressive? I guess that is what I am saying. But, damn, this is a very nice brew.
