Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

(draft, RBSG05) Big beige head eventually settles from the turbidity atop a red-black body. Aroma is sweet, coffee, roast, some vanilla, smoke, light chocolate. Taste is sweet, coffee, roasty, some vanilla chocolate. But really, it is all about the coffee. Coffee aftertaste that lingers and lingers (in a good way). Really smooth and creamy, full body. (8/5/8/5/17)

(660ml bottle, bottled 11/04, sampled 6/12/05) A soda fizz accompanies the pour, which yields a big brown milkshakish head atop a black body with red edges. Aroma is moderately sweet, coffee, roasty, some chocolate -- evokes a rich mocha torte. Taste is moderately sweet, coffee, chocolate, some roast. FWIW, I noticed a cigarette smoke element about mid-bottle, but after a couple of sips, it went away. Alcohol is fairly well hidden, though it, accompanied by some herbal bitterness, does reveal itself somewhat in the swallow. Aftertaste is all coffee. Syrupy and smooth full body, very drinkable for a beer with this much oomph. Of course I was well aware of the warnings associated with the bottled version of this beer, but I am not disappointed -- this is a great beer in its own right, and I can only imagine how amazing the brewpub version must be. Only complaint I have (other than the cigarette quality) is not truly fair, i.e., a bit too much coffee. (8/4/8/5/16)

Black, of course, with a faint brown head. Aroma is of coffee and red wine. Smooth, rich chocolate flavors, and of course fresh roasted coffee. Lots of coffee, in fact. But I like coffee flavor in stouts, so I liked this one quite a bit. The aformentioned chocolate and red wine play a role, as well, but remain in the background. Update, Nov 29, 05 - I had this again, and this time a full bottle, after Thanksgiving dinner. Man, this stuff is good.

Many thanks to Wunderbier. As Iceman said this is 1984 Michael Jackson....never mind. Well it had a nice appearance. Do you like Espresso? If you say yes you may cream your.....never mind. If not you may be looking for something else. A very bitter chocolate and coffee taste. You need not seek complexity here just a coffee house. Is this beer overrated? Oh yes. But is it good? Yes also. Starbucks beer style homies....

Tap and Spuyten Duyvil - as one that loves his coffee as much as his beer, and one that has tried quite a few coffee stouts, I must say that I really haven’t seen any beer that has "married coffee and beer so naturally and seamlessly" - the mouthfeel is oil and rich, but not overly thick and heavy - jet black with minimal head - aroma of, yup, coffee, with hints of sweet cream and roasted malt - soft carbonation accentuates the creaminess of the flavor - coffee, cream and a hint of chocolate - I’ve never tasted such common flavors put to such good use, or taste quite so complex - a great beer all around.

This is my first rating since 3.2.2006 and from what I recall this was one of the most sought after beers. I must say that I am not disappointed. Standard high octane stout look, dark viscous black and a thin head. The aroma is impressive. Tons of roasted coffee, malt and a hint of citrus in the aroma. The flavor follows through beautifully with the marriage of coffee, maltiness and bitterness at the end. This is extremely nice on the palate, not think and sticky like some imperial stouts, but smooth until the coffee gets in there with the alcohol. Very impressive and worth the wait.

This is like an iced coffee. Coffee aroma, coffee flavor; coffee everywhere. Black with a small tan head. Thick and heavy on the palate. It is a little simple for a 100th percentile beer, being all about coffee and nothing else, but what it does offer it does amazingly well.

Bottle - huge coffee nose. Hints of chocolate in there as well. Body is black as night with a great big, rocky, light brown head. Big coffee flavor, too. Imagine that! However, this coffee flavor is not quite as raw as the Bells Java Stout, which to my palate was undrinkable. The only Bells beer I don’t care for. As the beer warms, some chocolate comes more to the fore along with a touch of dark fruit. Large, full palate. Just an excellent, excellent beer!

Bottle, purchased at the Publick House. Nearly black color, large tan head. Huge aroma of three week old coffee grinds, peas, and something that might have recently been burning. Coffee flavor is intense but not quite as much as in the flavor. Bitter, roasted, oak, much less fruit and sweetness than the average imperial stout, dry and bitter finish. Little alcohol detectable. If it’s slightly one dimensional, it does that one dimension very well.
