Commercial Description:
Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

Bottle. Pours brown with beige head. Good peppery notes, with caramel malts. Interesting beer.

What an awesome concept for a beer. Aroma is good and spicey with a definate peppercorn smell. Lots of rye flavor, and you can actually taste peppercorn. Amazing how well the spices and rye bread work together.

Pours a hazy amber with not much head - less than 1 mm. Aroma is sesame and malt. Flavor is a nice bready rye flavor, but not too much - stabilized with some hop bite and some light fruitiness.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear, medium brown amber color with a medium-sized ivory-colored head. The aroma opens with a dose of peppercorn mixed interestingly with sweet, grainy malt with only minor hints of rye. There is a vague fruitiness as well. The flavor pale malts, a touch bready, that is mostly lacking the sweetness from the nose. The peppercorn taste is very distinct once you start drinking it down. The spicy rye character is also present and lasts through the finish. This has a medium body with medium carbonation. This was an interesting beer but not your everyday drinker.

Bottled at Bishop’s Arms Vasagatan, Stockholm. Hazy abe, mid-sized head. Quite intriuing spicy pepper aroma. Dry, clean and crisp. Burning black pepper overruns everything on it’s way. The crisp bready malt get crushed under the weight of the peppercorns. With a level of spicyness more suited to a steak than a drink it’s completely out of balance.

12 ounce bottle shared by Eric. Pours a light brown color with a small white head. The aroma is sweet malts, spices, coca cola, light rye. The flavor is very unique; sweet and initially light spices, rye, toasted malts, then this insane peppery spice bite takes over. Hot massive peppery flavors. Leaves your throat hot. A cool thing.

12 oz. bottle from Green’s. This beer starts really strong. It pours a beautiful cloudy brown. The aroma is full of rye and pepper with hints of bark. The flavor is surprisingly and a little disappointingly light. As one drinks the pepper becomes spicier and more noticeable, which is pleasing, but that is the only thing going on. Outside of that the flavor lacks any complexity. Also the beer could stand to be a little fuller in the body. Pretty interesting over all but it could use some tweaking.

Pours reddish brown color with tan head. Aromas of rye, pepper, caramel and chocolate. Very peppery flavor. I can feel the heat in th back of my throat. There is some spiciness from the rye and fruity flavors. If you like peppercorns this is a beer for you. An intersting beer, I like it, but its not something I could drink every day.
