Commercial Description:
This medium-bodied ale is characterized by its rich, malty sweetness. The interplay of five different malts provide a slight toffee and chocolate flavor profile. This is the dark beer that light beer drinkers love. A favorite of DC 101's "Elliot in the Morning" crew before, after and during Cap's hockey games. $1.01 from each pint sold will be donated to Olie (Kolzig) and Elliot's Great Saves Program.

Tap. Clear, medium brown color. Tan head. A nice touch of roasted grain in the nose. Flavor is all roast. A bit of hazelnut character in the finish. Lots of toffee and a bit of chocolate malt as well. Very good.

On tap at the District Chophouse. Pours a clear almost cola brown with a medium beige head. Nutty toasted malt, a bit of caramel. Toast, malt, a bit of chocolate. Finishes with a light bitterness and some roast overtones.

On tap @ the Chophouse. First off another horrible pour by the bartender. Deep brown with a tan head. Aroma of biscuits, nuts, roasted grains and faint hops. Taste about the same, sweet malt base with roasty bitterness. Pretty solid.

Location: Tap at the Brew Pub , 8/7/09

Overall Impression: Probably my favorite of the beers I tried there, it wasn’t an overly impressive brew, but it had a really nice nuttiness to it that made it pretty enjoyable. A nice, highly drinkable Brown Ale, that exceeded my expectations from this brewery.

Draught at the brewpub. Dark brown in color with not head at all. Light caramel and slight roast aroma, but you have to search for it. Fat malty flavor with caramel rye bread and some roasted malt. Just enough hops to give it a good balance. Medium bodied with a good smooth mouthfeel. Most of their beers were served with lower than normal carbonation, which worked really well with these session style ales actually. Average at best, but well balanced and seems free of any real problems to the average drinker. As a note of warning: they serve one of their beers on nitro tap at any given time, in addition to regular carbonation, and call it the "velvet". The nut brown was up this time around and I tried it this way as well. Awful stuff. I’m usually not the biggest fan of nitro anyway, but having the two side by side to compare showed how thoroughly this beer was ruined through the nitrogen service. Flat and thin with no aroma to speak of. Avoid at all costs.
