The smell was god-awful. I know it was just toasted malts, but I think those malts were over-toassted; I could have sworn my wife was burning hair or something. But no, it was just the beer.
After smelling it I almost backed out. Glad I didn’t. Really great beer, the toasted malts was not so unpleasant on the tongue as it was on the nose. I didn’t taste the touch of "magical New Orleans Spirit" that the bottle suggested, unless they weren’t being literal; but it was a pleasant taste that left me satisfied.
Balanced carbonation level with no unpleasant aftertaste. Definately a drinkable beer, I could easily see myself purchasing and drinking this again.

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Apr 1, 2008 I’ve heard alot about this brew as a southern staple and a gateway beer. My assessment is that this is exactly what it is.....a decent little gateway beer. Pours reddish brown, with a foamy, quickly dissipating, off-white head. Random spots and flares of lacing slowly drip back down to the body. The aroma shows sweetened cereal grains, dry, dark fruity notes, and mildly earthy, floral hops. The flavor is similar, with sweet toasted grains showing over faint, dry cocoa and fruity malts. The body is thin and watery, with sugar lending what little substance there is. Finishes pretty dry and sweet on the palate. Not something I’d ever go for again, but it still beats the hell out of most pale lagers. If that helps convert some folks, I’m all for it. amee16 (62), Valparaiso, Indiana, USA

Pours a deep clear amber with light foamy white head. Aroma is malty and swampy/earthy. Flavor starts off sharp and tingly and finishes with hints of caramel and coffee. Interesting... | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Mar 25, 2008 Smokey smell, definitely smoke taste. I like it a lot. Some malt, nothing too much happening but the flavor that is there is great. The best of the Dixie beers I bought in New Orleans. Would buy again. Dough77 (777), Aurora, Illinois, USA

Dark amber pour with notes of malt, , slight caramel, nothing overwhelming. Went down nice enough, just not much flavor going on to make me want to revisit it.
