Editor’s note: Brewed by Djævlebryg at Brøckhouse, Hillerød, Denmark.

English: Son of Nekron is a top-fermented porter. We use peat smoked malt which gives the beer a distinct smoked character. The roasted malts and dark muscovado sugar turn Son of Nekron into an almost pitch-black beer and add touches of coffee, chocolate, and peat smoke. Son of Nekron goes very well with stews and heavier dishes.

Bottle received in trade. Papso! Cool label. Pours dark brown with very little head. Lots of coffee and roast in the aroma with a hint of sweetness and what I later determined to be a smoky note. Very enjoyably flavored porter. Roasy, hint of malt sweetness, touch of smoke and oxidation. Medium body and a slick mouth feel. A good one for the Halloween season.

Tap at Lord Nelson in Copenhagen. Black color with zero foam. A lot of coffee, chocolate in the aroma and a touch of smoke. The flavor contained primarily coffee and chocolate, not so much burnt malt notes. Also some smoky notes in the taste. The liquid was dry and the aftertaste was sitting in a while. Not bad at all.

Bouteille de 500 ml obtenue via Importations Privées Bièropholie. Arôme: Odeur de café et de chocolat avec une pointe de raisins. Apparence: La couleur est noire opaque. Présence d’un mince col beige mousseux et d’une fine dentelle sur le verre. Saveur: Goût de café et de chocolat avec une pointe de petits fruits. Durée moyenne de l’arrière goût. Palette: Le corps est moyen avec une texture légèrement crémeuse. Moyenne effervescence en bouche. Légère présence de café en arrière goût. (Rating #2604)

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color porter with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of dry coffee and quality black chocolate is very nice. Taste is also dominated by some dry coffee (maybe even a touch too dry) with great notes of black chocolate. I can’t say though that I tasted nay peats malt in this even though label mentions it. Body is about average with light creamy notes and good carbonation.

Black with a lasting brown head. Aroma: Liquorice, smoke, tar, chocolate. Taste: Tar, smoke, chocolate, coffee. Also some fruit and bitterness to balance the beer. A really really good beer.

500 ml bottle from Bieropholie, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Deep brown-black with a decent light mocha head. Aroma: Some grape-like fruitiness, some darker dried fruits, dark and milk chocolates, some vanilla, surprisingly bright, kinda woody and vinous, slight hints of peaty smoke. Palate: Medium+ body with moderate effervescence. Flav.: A bit fruitier than the nose with slightly less malt character, more organic acid tang; a good deal of green hops and woodiness, more stern than the nose; dry with good bitterness and a bit of mineral, green hops and dark malts that linger for quite a while.

This is a heavy-duty porter.

Bottle. Deep brown with a large light brown head. Aromas of roasted malt, dark chocolate, espresso and some licorice. The flavour is a bit smoky with notes of coffee, dark chocolate and burned malt.

My Bottom Line:
This well attenuated Porter offers plenty of roasted malts and fruity esters, while its underlying caramel is quickly balanced out by wooden hops and dark malt bitterness.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A coffee-colored head of foam sits atop the near jet black.
-Carbonation is almost frothy, made of big bubbles.
-Because this is rather dry, it is also very easy drinking.
-Smoke is very subtle throughout, appearing linked to the "regular" roastiness.
-Light tartness accompanies the blackberry-like esters.
-I would have preferred a few more residual sugars, but that doesn’t mean this is not a good Porter.
