Commercial Description:
Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45°P, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continually hopped with high alpha American hops, dry-hopped every day in the fermenter for a month, and aged for a month on whole leaf hops, 120 Minute IPA is by far the strongest IPA ever brewed. And at 21% ABV and 120 IBU’s, you can see why we are calling this the Holy Grail for Hopheads. Editors note: ABV reduced down to 18% in 2009.

bottle(2008), pours dark copper, thin off white head. The booze can be smelled from feet away, Suprisingly nice aroma of grapefruit, citrus, and condensed milk and carmel. Sweet malty body, some biscuit and fruity yeast flavors as well, end with a light aromatic and lightly bitter hop bite. I’m suprised the alcohol is not felt, more of a heavy sweet candied pear and apricot with a mild bitterness following. Quite nice at 21 percent. The mouth is light to medium in body with a light carbonation. I like it.

On draught. Tasted of caramel, glazed ham, and rotten watermelon peels. More in common with a liqueur than an IPA--not a hint of bitterness here, either. Oversweet.

Pours a cloudy orange-brown with a super thin white head, almost oily at the surface. I can tell it is thick and sticky already because it started to run down the side of the bottle when I poured it too slowly. Talk about viscous. Smells of a ton of hops, very refreshing, with a bit of lightly caramelized sugar and of course, excitement! Pure peach juice in concentrate as well. Taste is...Wow, sweet. I poured half a beer and save the rest, but now I’m thinking I should have split it into thirds or quarters. So the flavor starts out with that sweet syrupy, peachyness. The bittering hops then eclipse the sweet briefly and fade to the edges of the tongue leaving what I would call a pleasant evanescent wave of the sugars and an even slighter reminiscence of the hops. Certainly interesting, totally fun. I wish the hops showed through more.

Aroma is strong, hoppy, and surprisingly fruity - the orange and hop aromas battle for dominance, so one whiff is hoppy while the next is of orange. It pours a hazy orange-amber with a fairly thick and rather persistent white head. Flavor is richly orange and a little sweet with a firm hoppy but only slightly bitter hop undertone. This is quite unlike any IPA I have ever had - well worth the effort of setting up a trade! Texture is rich and silky smooth, yet fairly tingly and lively.

Honey colored and highly carbonated, the palate is somehow still syrupy, likely due to the heavy alcohol, which is apparent in every sip. Yes, it’s a great beer if you’re looking to get tipsy off one, but there’s no real balance to it. It’s not as hoppy as most IPAs, with much caramel in both the taste and the aroma. Still, for what it is it’s an interesting beer and fun to have every once in awhile.

Pours a golden amber color with minimal lacy head. Aroma of this bottle is absolutely amazing. I have never smelled an IPA this crazy. Candy sweetness, earthy, caramel goodness. The hops are very flavorful and are very well over the top but they do not leave that lingering bitterness of most IPAs.

On tap in a sniffer. Pours slighty hazy with nice lacing.sweet malt and grapefruit on the nose. Super sweet with an alcohol bite. Always a good beer to start a night off with.
