Commercial Description:
Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45°P, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continually hopped with high alpha American hops, dry-hopped every day in the fermenter for a month, and aged for a month on whole leaf hops, 120 Minute IPA is by far the strongest IPA ever brewed. And at 21% ABV and 120 IBU’s, you can see why we are calling this the Holy Grail for Hopheads. Editors note: ABV reduced down to 18% in 2009.

Had this for a second time on tap at sunset. It was really nice the first time from bottle, it was outstanding the second time. Sweet aroma of citrus fruits, sugars, and sweet hops. Flavor is complex and well-balanced fruit and mild hop display with a nice bourbon finish.

Poured from 12oz bottle. Wow. Really strong, all around. Strong smell, almost like a bourbon. Strong taste...kind of hard to discern any hoppy flavor through the high alcohol level, but I have to say, I really liked this beer. Very murky appearance. Considering it’s about the equivalent of 6 shots of vodka, I’d reach for this beer rather than liquor next time. Definitely a sipping beer, although it didn’t last long in my glass.

4oz glass on tap from RFD in Washington D.C. Looks like brandy in the little snifter it came in with a translucent gold amber body with a thin, ringing white head. I was surprised at how balanced the aroma was, honey, flowers, cookies, grapefruits, grass, slightly boozy, etc. Flavor was also well balanced, caramel, pears, tangerines, tropical fruits like pineapple, cookies, bread, herbs, earth. The booze really hits your tongue but it’s not nearly as bad as you’d imagine. I’ve had 10% abv beers that were boozier. Full bodied obviously with lasting sweetness and bitterness. Reminded me of their Midas Touch but bigger. Great when it warmed up. Very good, but I can also understand why others might not like it. It’s certainly a lot to handle.

Aroma is almost bourbon-like, plenty of grapefruit, and obviously, a butt ton of hops. Appearance is cloudy and dark gold with very little head. Flavor is full of hop character, grapefruit, brown sugar and other complexities. Palate almost burns, but is also pretty creamy, which is outstanding. Wow.

Very strong. The aging and complexity really tends to mask the hoppiness to me. Very opaque amber in color, fruitiness and a bit of floralness. Very small head. The alcohol and bitterness are well within reason; it almost seems as though it should have more punch and not be so drinkable. You will certainly feel the effect of it through one bottle. Absolutely one to try.

Aroma: Obviously very hoppy. Appearence: Typical golden IPA. Flavor: As you can expect - 120 IBUs - it’s the 90-minute and then some - guessing Warrior hops. Bitterness hides heat of alcohol well (again as expected). Palate: sharp initial, slightly grittly finish. Overall impression: Exactly what you would expect from a 120 IBU IPA.
