GardenGabe (125), Denver, Colorado, USA Apr 26, 2009 Pour is dusky yellow with a whitish head. Initially smells of pine and grapefruit, as it warms a strong oder of over ripe cantaloupe. Very think and syrupy on the tongue. Taste of hops and sugar. This is so sweet it is almost undrinkable. arminjewell (100), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Apr 25, 2009 Pours orange/copper with white head, fairly opaque. Extremely thick on the palate, aroma gives deep hops and tart. Alcohol is definitely present in taste, not very reminiscent of an IPA, gives a strong apple/cider taste that goes down smooth but strong. A sipper and a pleasure to drink. bedainedebiere (274), Terrebonne, Quebec, Canada Apr 20, 2009 Updated: May 9, 2009I thought this would be hellish so that’s why I wanted the 90 Minute, but the owner of the Perfect Pour got this one out for my helpful but a little beer-ignorant brother; 3 x 9,99$ per bottle, what did he have to lose?... First, the beer is almost orange, very opaque with hop particules, white and green. The aroma is like strong glue (!) and caramel, very alchoolic; don’t smell it to much it might be headacheful. Once used to it, it is pleasing. The taste is refreshing (even at 21% ABV), a little tongue-tingling, a lot of grapefruit hop bitterness, obvious notes of sweetness and I would say that the taste of alchool varies with the size of the sip you take: big sip, big alchool taste, small sip... A sipper it is. In fact, it seems that each sip tastes a little different than the other. Although I wasn’t sure at first, I now think it is one of the most delicious beverage I ever had. It is incredibly powerful and tasty. As for those civilisation-threatening nuclear weapons, this is an american weapon of mass destruction... A quality one, not like a... I’ll shut up so this gets on the site... Extreme madness bomb of a beer for sure! The third one I’m having rewriting those lines is leaving me speechless... Let’s talk in numbers since it numbs me heheheh ? hehe CptGreencoat (68), Kettering, Ohio, USA Apr 19, 2009 Bottle (thanks to HOPSHUNTER!) Pours to a super thick, cloudy hop syrup with a lasting, white head. Maybe it’s the fact that I can’t buy this in Ohio, but I was very highly impressed with this one. While it most certainly isn’t a session beer (I found it a challenge to champ the whole bottle,) it is truly a work of art. More of a cider or nectar than I would have thought. Nose is malt, sweet honey, alcohol and very floral hops. It’s very sugary sweet and thick on the palate. I would love to have this one again. Big ups to DFH for making such a ridiculous product. harbuck76 (127), El Cajon, California, USA Apr 18, 2009 12 oz bottle. bought from world of beer in clearwater fl. in 02 or 03 . Pours hazy orange with thin white head.. pours like ms butterworth. very thick this beer is massive. verry syrupy. alcohol is definatly present seems more malty than hoppy.. it was a sipper. took a while to finish. aco2 (11), Florida, USA Apr 17, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Poured a dark amber which was very cloudy. Heavy sediment toward the end. Very small, short-lived soapy white head. Very strong hops and alcohol aroma, with strong citrus accents. Smell is somewhat similar to sherry - slightly nutty. Very sweet hops, malt, and citrus accents in the flavor along with an almost unbearably thick mouthfeel - almost syrupy. Reletively smooth finish given the ABV, with surprisingly light alcohol burn.
Somewhat unpleasant drink due primarily to the mouthfeel and sweetness.
I suppose I’m not a fan of very high alcohol beers because I did not like this one nor Samichlaus Helles. It is not the alcohol content, but rather the sweetness and cough-syrup mouthfeel to which I object. beerchugger (285), Colorado, USA Apr 17, 2009 Updated: May 18, 2009Poured a mirky opaque orange color which reminded me of grapefruit juice. Minimal head formation and little lacing. The beer appears to be very thick, almost like syrup. The smell immediately burns my nostrils from the alcohol. This is an extreme beer! Once my nose acclimates, I can pick out very strong medicinal qualities with faint citrus notes in the background. Very medicinal aroma here. The first taste is a shock. I thought I was prepared for this behemoth; I guess I was wrong! First taste immediately shows medicine and is thick like syrup which then changes to a sweet character, then changes to a more citrus quality, then to a bitter character. The finish is warm and bitter, the whole time with medicine in the background. Very surprised by the medicine quality. However, by the third swallow, I’ve acclimated to the alcohol and now I mostly notice simply sweet notes up front coupled with citrus. Still finishes bitter, but the warming effect has greatly diminished. After letting it warm for 15 minutes, the bitterness becomes more pronounced, but not overwhelming. The majority of the beer can simply be described as sweet fruit. Incredible extreme beer. Highly recommend it to anyone who consideres themselves a fan of true craft beer. arjoseph (594), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 13, 2009 12 oz bottle into Duvel tulip; purchased at Lakeview Binny’s. This is probably a bad idea for a weeknight, but what the hell. Foamy head isn’t large but is fairly lasting over the opaque orange beer. Twiggy hop aroma reminds me a little bit of Raison d’Etre with a deep fruitiness and sweet malts underneath. For its strength it’s surprising I don’t get more alcohol burn in the nose. Sudsy granular lacing is like a pointilist painting with lots of space between dots. Syrupy sweet in the mouth and unlike any other IIPA in existence, the hops being an accent rather than the main line. Wow is this sweet, like melted down flavorless hard candy (imagine the candy stick in a pack of Fun Dip) carrying the tangy lemony flavor of the hops. Any hops acidity or bite this hoped to have is subsumed under the monolithic sweetness. It’s like a light barley wine focused on melony juicy flavors rather than raisins and brown sugar. Actually kind of delicious, not as harsh as I was expecting (the alcohol is surprisingly hidden in the mouth, and only comes out as your forehead gets tingly and numb; there’s not even the characteristic strongly alcoholic beer quality of the alcohol wafting up in the back of the throat). This might be the best of DFH’s "crazy big" beers.
