| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 21, 2009 Bottle from Warehouse Liquors in Chicago, served at room temperature in a snifter. Pours thick, hazy orange with a half-inch white head that reduces to a cap of lacing. Nose is huge and resiny, with the expected citrus and pine right up front. Tastes of ripe oranges, mango, slight caramel, and candied sugar, along with some surprisingly heavy malts.
This was a recent bottling, so it would benefit from some cellaring, but this was the first and only chance for a while that I had to try it. Struck me as more of a cross between a big IIPA and a barleywine. Goes down exceptionally smooth for the ABV, though. ditmier (1053), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 20, 2009 Bottle from March 2006 - Pours a thick dk orange with a lasting 1/2 inch off white head...aroma is caramel corn, candy and hop resin...flavour is helped by a few years in the bottle, smooth blend of sweeter than shit malt and a hop backbone...finishes cloying but not bitter interestingly enough...alcohol present in the pack of the throat, but nowhere else...great experience beer, but not something to drink all the time... altonbrownd (1888), Amsterdam, Netherlands
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 19, 2009 Amber body, creamy head. Hoppy nose and taste. Quite sweet. Fruit notes, especially grapefruit (as usual). Then the high-ABV kicks in! A hopman’s delight. GranvilleTim (476), Granville, Illinois, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 14, 2009 Great hop aroma during the pour. Light amber in color with a nice cream head. First taste was sweet with a hoppy aftertaste.Left a little beer in the bottle and swirled up the yeast and poured it in after first taste. Changed the sweetness. I’m going to grab another at Rudy’s before they’re all gone so I can see how it mellows with aging. garthicus (1273), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Feb 12, 2009 Bottled March 06, sampled Feb 09! Thanks to Blankboy for sharing with HogTownHarry and I. I’m the only one rating!! Anyhow, Appearance: Cloudy orange, small but sticky white head. Aroma: Citrus, malt, lots of caramel and hops, slight alcohol. Grapefruit whispering in the back. Flavour: Rich, sweet as heck, wonderful warming alcohol feel, honey, wow, so much going on. I can’t help but think what it was like fresh as this is incredible 3 years on! Wow. jmulv (82), Rensselaer, New York, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Feb 11, 2009 This one’s certainly not for those with weak constitutions. But at about $9 per 12oz bottle, it isn’t meant to be consumed very often either. This is my first true "experience" beer, and I was very happy that I indulged my curiosities. The taste has a very citrusy start, then a kick of alcohol, and finally fades out leaving you with a citrusy residue. The taste is certainly not for everyone, but everyone should have the experience of drinking a beer this intense. ryanknock (150), San Francisco, California, USA
| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 1/10 | 1/5 | 10/20 | Feb 9, 2009 Serious hop overload in the nose. Orange, grapefruit, soap, basil, burning. Medium body, slight and sticky, pale orange color. Flavor is like basil, grass, orange and alcohol. Not even really an double IPA, this is something different entirely. Finish is acidic and pucking, you pull back. Points for the effort. BrotherGrendel (580), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 9, 2009 a- pours a dark orange hue with 1 fingers worth of off-white creamy head that is mostly diminishing, minimal particulates and fair lacing
s- surprisingly sweet and syrupy malty nose for a DIPA, tones of citrus and dark fruit, pine-based hops well in the background
t- initially dominated by caramel malts but quick transition to citrus and piney hops that quickly fades, minimal aftertaste characterized by syrupy sweet malts and alcohol, not the most balanced DIPA i have sampled recently but a decent showing
m- quite a heavy-bodied, thick DIPA with mild carbonation and a stiff alcohol presence that is not surprising given the abv
d- With a mouth-dropping abv, it would be hard to drink multiple servings in one session; 120minute reminds me more of a hoppy strong ale than the DIPAs I am used to on the west coast, $30 for a 4pack is quite a pricetag and there isn’t much uniqueness here for a return visit
