keepersj12 (774), Sicklerville, New Jersey, USA May 16, 2008 A bottle from 2007. Nice looking cloudy amber to red with little head. Aroma jumps at you. Sweet malts mostly. Flavor is sweet malts with a hop finish. Not as big a hop presence as you might expect. The alcohol is barely noticeable. Nicely balanced but not for the timid. golubj (1275), Sunnyvale, California, USA May 15, 2008 Late 2006 bottle. I have been meaning to have this beer for a long time. Cloudy dark amber with reddish hints, no head. Aroma is very malty, sweet malt mostly, a little alcohol; but good as I really enjoy the sweet malt character in Dogfish beers. The flavor is the same, ripe fruitiness, very sweet malt, like a rich cognac or something. Drinkable, nicely aged, and no notice of hops. evilempire (122), sheffield, South Yorkshire, England May 15, 2008 finally tracked this down on my last visit stateside, and drank last weekend. sadly, for me it doesn’t live up to the hype, but don’t get me wrong, it’s still a decent beer. however, I would hesitate to call it an IPA, as despite the phenomenal hop rate, this is barely enough to balance the massive alcohol sweetness. all in all, a very good barley wine. now what we need is this level of hopping on the 60 or 90 minute mash profile. now THAT would be a superb IPA radagast83 (1273), Fairfax, Virginia, USA May 15, 2008 On draft from Fall’s Church Dogfish location. Listed as 18%. Wow. This beer was nothing like I expected. I expected an astringent, alcohol laden beverage that was nearly undrinkable. I was wrong. This beer is one of the most carefully balanced beers I’ve had in quite some time! It is drinkable, the alcohol is quite hidden considering the alcohol percentage. A typical double IPA can be hard to drink at around 10 percent. What a way to clock in at #1000! puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA May 14, 2008 Bottle shared by Golubj. This beer is a lot better than I expected. The normal high grav IIPA bores the hell out of me, lots of overly sweet crystal, too much hops, etc. This one is way better though, tasting like a well aged English Barleywine, with lots of sherry and oxidation notes. Chocolate, candy corn, port abound, with large notes of pure cocoa and vegetal sweetness. Very nice stuff, surprisingly drinkable. daknole (2805), Plantation, Florida, USA May 14, 2008 Updated: Jul 2, 2008Ok I drank this again and found that the last time I had this I knew nothing about beer. I do prefer the 90 minute by far...but this one is good too. Cloudy amber color with sweet smells of complex hops, malts and fruit. Sweet on the tongue and 21% are you kidding me? Nice. soccer290 (135), Highland Park, Illinois, USA May 14, 2008 Wow. I was quite excited to try this beer, if you can call it that at 21%. Aroma smells of hops, as it has a lot in there. Appearance is a reddish brown color (reminds me of an apple cider). Flavor tastes strongly of hops, bitter from it. Palate is quite interesting, as its smooth going down, but the aftertaste is strong with all 21% ABV. I enjoyed this quite a bit. Almost finished now, and I am somewhat drunk bierkoning (5987), La Tropica, Netherlands May 13, 2008 Bottle from Brad. Reddish brown color. Candied fruit and flowery hops in the aroma. Malty sweet, sugary, but also firm flowery hopbitter flavor with dried red fruit and grapefruit. Alcohol is present, but well hidden considering the very high ABV. Deceptively drinkable and decently balanced. Very very long aftertaste. Good!
