Commercial Description:
Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45°P, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continually hopped with high alpha American hops, dry-hopped every day in the fermenter for a month, and aged for a month on whole leaf hops, 120 Minute IPA is by far the strongest IPA ever brewed. And at 21% ABV and 120 IBU’s, you can see why we are calling this the Holy Grail for Hopheads. Editors note: ABV reduced down to 18% in 2009.

It’s interesting, but the flavor profile is way harsh. I’m not a fan of IPAs in general, but like the 60, 90, and alehouse 75. The 120 is a chore to drink.

12oz bottle 2007 sampled at Butters’ 1500 / MmmcKay’s 200 tasting. Crystal clear reddish orange pour with ring of near white head. Apricot, raisin, Absolute honey all the way around. Dried old fruit, but with a fresh mellowed pine hop. Like a mead. Alcohol has smoothed out immenselely. Total barleywine, very good. Aging has done this justice.

Vintage 2007 bottle. Almost 3 years old. Smells of fruits and malt. Smells like curry or Asian 5 spice. Ridiculous number of spices thrown into a bottle. Wow that is rich. Wow. Aging a 120 is the right way to drink a 120. Drinking these fresh is a waste over than to try it that way for the first time. Super uber ripe sweet fruit. Wow. The hops have died. This is a barley wine now. Not a IPA. Notes of Cognac and Sherry. Tastes like fortified wine. Meade like. I’m rating this like it were a barley wine. And a good rating it gets.

To enjoy this beer, you should know what you are getting yourself into. Beautiful color, very sweet and alchoholy nose, tastes much more like mead or honey. Almost no sign of bitterness you would expect from an imperial ipa. All that said, a very good beer for sipping and sharing.

Pours a deep goldish orange. Aroma burns my nose with its loaded alcohol content. Good Lord! I can’t get past the scotch in the aroma. Flavor is intense but more complex with notes of caramel, hops, and vanilla extract. Nice and buttery and some in-your-face booze in the finish.

Had one in Florida about 2 years ago. Same as it was then. Smells like hop heaven with dried fruit and pine. Taste is sweet and alcohol, some hops after that clears, and finishes bitter. Almost dries out in the end, but lingers a nice port or dessert wine finish. Overall worth the $10 -12 oz bottle price, if not just for sake of drinking it. Got one in the cellar for another year or 5!
