Commercial Description:
Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45°P, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continually hopped with high alpha American hops, dry-hopped every day in the fermenter for a month, and aged for a month on whole leaf hops, 120 Minute IPA is by far the strongest IPA ever brewed. And at 21% ABV and 120 IBU’s, you can see why we are calling this the Holy Grail for Hopheads. Editors note: ABV reduced down to 18% in 2009.

Pours a beautiful bronze with a light brown head. The nose is hoppy but not as strong as the 90 IPA in my opinion. More of a fruity or sweeter nose to me with apples, peaches, grapefruits, or apricots standing out with only a slight piney hint showing up. The taste expounds on that with more of the fruit sweetness and alcohol coming out in the beer than the hops. Definite apples, and peaches with a hint of vanilla and an obvious maltiness. Nice "legs" on this. Seems almost like a sweeter EKU 28. The 20% is definitely not noticeable. Smooth sweet finish with a little of the bitterness in the aftertaste. Wonderful beer. I'd like to age some of this and taste it later.

Tough call on this one - I would not like this if I was not a beer geek and ratebeerian - but I need to put that into perspective. More and bigger is not everything. Light copper appearance - very sparkly. Light white head - good lacing though. Strong aroma - first reaction is cat urine! But after reconsidering - I figured it must be processed hops! What do I know - I’m not a brewer! For a 20.04% ABV - this is extremely smooth - alcohol is hidden extremely well. Flavor has elements of sweet candy, overripe bread and stale citrus. Not an everyday beer - but glad I had a chance to sample one. Very smooth finish considering the ABV.

12 oz bottle. Poured a clear dark orange color. Head was thick and off white with decent retention and lacing. Smelled of tangy citrus, perfume, and malty molasses. Sweet on the tongue with thick warming alcohol. Full bodied, slick mouth feel. Very boozy with strong malty molasses and caramel flavors accompanied by citrusy lemon peel and whiskey. Hop bitterness was minimal, must have been tempered by the sugars somewhat. Interesting beer.

12oz bottle and I think I got this the last time I was on the east coast or this was a bonus, I’ve had this a few times but never actually rated it, I wonder why? 12/18/06 Bottled on. Shared with Cyn, thought why not crack this bad boy tonight. Pours orange red with a thin tan head. The nose is sweet hoppy and altogether big, very much a psuedo barleywine. Sweet light big old hops in the taste. Very large but the alcohol content alters the composition of this beer as many big alcohol dipas become barleywine like. Dried fruit comes through as well as pretty nice mellow taste and the alc is hidden, its clearly there but it is not as omnipresent as some would expect. Glad to have this under my rating belt.

Bottled, brought from the USA. Hazy red color, short lasting head. Aroma of hop, caramel malt, alcohol, sugar. Strong alcoholic taste, cognac, malty, bitter. Good stuff.

Ok I drank this again and found that the last time I had this I knew nothing about beer. I do prefer the 90 minute by far...but this one is good too. Cloudy amber color with sweet smells of complex hops, malts and fruit. Sweet on the tongue and 21% are you kidding me? Nice.

750ml Bottle, GBBF2003. Shared with BeerLimey, Duff, Nuffield, SilkTork, and Spiesy. Syrupy bronze liquid, low hop aroma, lots of fruity sweet malt and nose stripping alcohol. Much too sweet and alcoholic in the mouth and thick sweet and syrupy finish. Over strong, over priced and too big a bottle for one to handle alone

Brewed 03 04 05. Light aroma of warm alcohol and hops. Sweet liquer of alcohol, malt, hop oil and hops. Orange with thin foam. Hops are more noticeable in the hop oil and body than in flavour. Alcohol comes across more extreme than the hops. Alcohol comes across too much to qualify as a top beer for me.
