It pours to a mostly dissipating yellowish head that provides EXCELLENT lacing. The body is very viscous and opaque copper/gold in color. SLOW bubbling. The aroma is still HUGE. There are lots of citrus hops, caramel and doughy malts. OMFG, this aged well. I’ve had it fresh and it seems to get better with age. The flavor is very much a sugary honey malted barley candy. Peaches and mandarin oranges. The palate is thick and viscous, like drinking liquid caramel. It’s still quite carbonated. I’d love to see this aged to 8 years. Nate (2558), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 9, 2007 Bottle courtesy of ’Naka, shared with him and dpjuart. Insanely freakish hop nose, apricots macerated in brandy and pine needles. Grapefruit and candied pineapple. Golden amber, brilliant body, with mild haze. Thin foamy off-white lacing head. Heavy syrupy body with medium carbonation. Starts sweet, too much so, leaving ulcers on my tongue. The full spectrum of hops, from the faint floral oily notes to the grapefruit oil to the piney bitter resinous finish. Just way too sweet to enjoy thoroughly. Alcohol liqueur sweet finish, warming, with mild bitterness. Bockyhorsey (2552), Mesa, Arizona, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Oct 12, 2005 600. Bottle found at a liquer store in Milwaukee, Wi. Aromas of fermantaion and oranges and alcohol. Body a burt orange in color with off white head. Leaves good lacing on glass. Flavor is a warming feeling of a alcohol and friut ( oranges, whisky barrel flavor and mild syrup flavor. Leaves an orange syrupy fruit aftertaste on palate. Should be a perfect night cap at home if the temp outside is arround 0 degrees. Wow. dwyerpg (2545), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 24, 2007 A nice hoppy alcoholic aroma. Wow. This has bite, but comes off just a little bit funky. Would never know how hight the alcohol is, but is certainly a nice beer. pivo (2537), Germany
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 25, 2003 Not as well balanced as the 60 or 90 minute for some reason. It's like the malt body and aggressive hopping cancel each other out here instead of complementing and/or intensifying each other. Still, very good and certainly a hophead's dream... jgb9348 (2515), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jul 3, 2003 I shared the 750 mL bottle with great friend: JonR888710 (as you can see from his rating), and to sum up everything...DFH made another great beer. The beer was served in two goblet type glasses, perfect for sight and for smell. The beer was perfectly golden with a slight head (I didn't want to pour it to vigourously). It was very tough for me to believe, but there was absolutely no sediment, and even held up to a very bright light at less than 3 centimetres away, the only thing you could detect in the beer was very small bubbles rising from the bottom, the way it should be. The smell was very nice...definately piney (from the hops) but as Jon pointed out to me...pineappley. It was a pretty welcome smell, and the aroma was already making my mouth water. The taste was very nice, not too alcoholic and definately not under-complex. A bunch of malt, hops, sugars stuck out big-time. The mouthful was pretty full-bodied, and when you tilted the glass, a bit of oily film would be left, just as the 2002-23% WWS. I don't know why this isn't as hoppy as DFH thinks it is, but either way, it was very welcomed. I'm glad ratebeer has this as an American Strong, and I wish more people would get their hands on it. DFH always creates beers which test the line on what they can get away with and what they cannot...and this one was definately one that they can get away with. I was thinking about buying another 750 mL to cellar, BUT with no sediment and no particles, I don't think it will change much over time. One of the best beers i've had in my short beer drinking history, to be perfectly honest. GregClow (2499), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 21, 2004 Rich amber colour with a thick body and no head. The aroma and flavour are quite hoppy, of course, but it is suprisingly well balanced, with some sugary, boozy sweetness running throughout. Very interesting and quite drinkable despite the high octane alcohol and hop overload. OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 14, 2005 fresh 12oz bottle from Jonathan3584 - Thanks!! - Pours light amber but quite thick with a nice medium offwhite head that laces pretty well all the way down the glass. Aroma is sharp citrus and pine and almost tickles your nose to sniff it. Flavor is surprisingly sweet honey-like over malt with just a touch of the alcohol flavor but not enough to be overwhelming. Finishes with a big warm alcohol effect. On the palate this is the thickest beer of this color I’ve ever seen. Actually feels much like a barleywine on the palate and flavored like one too. Another very unique beer from DFH. I expected more bitterness in the flavor but I enjoyed what I got.
