Commercial Description:
Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45°P, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continually hopped with high alpha American hops, dry-hopped every day in the fermenter for a month, and aged for a month on whole leaf hops, 120 Minute IPA is by far the strongest IPA ever brewed. And at 21% ABV and 120 IBU’s, you can see why we are calling this the Holy Grail for Hopheads. Editors note: ABV reduced down to 18% in 2009.

Bottle. Hazy amber and orange in colour with a medium sized off-white head. Very powerfull and well balanced. Malty with strong notes of dried and dark fruits, caramel, alcohol and hops.

Bottle. 2004 vintage. Pours a cloudy, orange body with a bubbly small white head. The aroma is yeasty with chewy orange hops, pine, and grains. Very sweet and sticky up front. The middle has some diminished hop character, well, it’s actually fairly resinous. Overall it’s just too sweet and alcoholic. Finishes with lingering bitterness. I think I’ll really have to try a fresher sample.

For me this would be more of a barley wine. Its a very strong beer. High in alcohol but not noticable in the taste. Very hoppy. Dark orange in color. Very good beer and its pleasant to drink. Very good beer to drink in the winter. Its will really warm you up.

Draft: Glossy gold. Stark white foam yields healthy lacework. Airy aroma laden with marmalade, candied pineapple and hop resin. Hint of graham, pine needles, raw cane sugar, melon seeds, thyme, and phenolics. Creamy carbonation slices its way through the viscosity. Extremely meaty from the start, with oozing pine resin and a palate-coating honey drizzled hop backbone. Unmasked alcohol presence with a touch of perfume. Remarkably soft, yet possesses a grainy sugar texture. Scarce toasted malt sweetness. Intense sweetness with notes of syruped peaches and rich honey. Continually viscous, honeyish, and extremely full-bodied/sticky, mellows the massive hop assault. Ends sweet with a dollop of fresh honeycomb that lingers. Surprisingly simple, despite of its hefty gravity. I prefer the dryer/less sweet/more brightly hoppy, bottle-conditioned [750ml] version over this much sweeter/thicker rendition.

Light whiskeyish amber color, light fading bubbles. Brandyish aroma with alcohol and resiny and grassy hops. Extraordinarily sweet up front, sticky on the lips, a swelling of resiny and grassy hops and a super strong but balanced bitterness in the finish. Tinge of alcohol burn around the tongue and in the throat but surprisingly smooth and balanced. A sipper for sure. Despite outstanding balance, it is less complex than one might imagine, dominated by sweet syrupy malts and resiny hops, there are not a multitude of flavors here. Hops linger in the palate forever, as does a prune-like flavor.

From hearing mixed reviews on this one I didn’t know what to expect. Well, I was extremely pleasantly surprised by what I consumed. Pours bright copper with a nice soapy tan head. The aroma was a hop f***ing bomb - tropical fruits, grapefruit, orange and more. There was a lot of malt backing it up - simply wonderful. Medium / thick body that is lush smooth and velvety wtih some soft carbonation on the finish. The flavor starts with sweet clean malts and tropical hops - mainly pineapple and grapefruit. The finish has some spice added along with pine. There is a syrupy sweetness that reminds me of nectar from core fruits. For being 21% the alcohol was kept well in check. While I was only sipping there was no burn at all. Wonderful - BIG thumbs up imperial IPA. Kind of sick, but it cost me $7.99 and I’m going to pick up another bottle or two.

Orange/copper in colour. Aroma of alcohol, pepper, pine and citrus. Flavour of alcohol, quite sweet, hoppy but not as much as I expected. Full bodied and seemed somewhat unbalanced. A few years in the cellar would definitely do this beer some good. Finishes with a huge alcohol bitterness. Thanks for the beer Clark.
