Commercial Description:
Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45°P, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continually hopped with high alpha American hops, dry-hopped every day in the fermenter for a month, and aged for a month on whole leaf hops, 120 Minute IPA is by far the strongest IPA ever brewed. And at 21% ABV and 120 IBU’s, you can see why we are calling this the Holy Grail for Hopheads. Editors note: ABV reduced down to 18% in 2009.

Medium head with a reddish color. Very hoppy with fruity and floral notes in the aroma. Strong hop content and bitterness tingle the back of the throat. A well balanced beer despite the huge hops and that makes it very drinkable.

Clearest of the three (60, 90, and 120, done as a "hopizontal" tasting). Looks like an amber. Head sticks around forever. Can smell the hops from a foot away. Getting closer, obviously very hoppy, quite floral. Sweetness is very prevalent, smells very refreshing. Would not in any way this is 20%, would think from the nose it’s a bit of a lawnmower beer. Bit nutty. No cloudiness even with the pour. What the heck? Odd that it’s this clear, just not expected. Certainly question the admonition on the label that this can be aged “for a decade or two”. With nothing vaguely resembling a floatie, how much bottle conditioning can it do. Anyways, at the taste, it’s syrupy, thick, very much coats the mouth. As it warms, more burn, when colder no burn at all for me. Still warming. Some definite citric qualities, the tartness stays around for a good while replacing any alcoholic burn. Predominant flavor is a subtle sweetness, which is expected, as for the abv this has to be chock full of malts. Hops are definitely there; for a beer of this strength, quite impressive that it would even have this hoppiness.

Map Room-Chicago. Ratebeer Fest 2003-Thanks to Volgon for buying the bottle. Has a huge aroma of sweetness and citrus. Not the hop heavy beer I was expecting. Still, very good but enjoy in moderation.

Clear amber, small head which is more than I expected. Aroma is strong citrus with pine and lesser grapefruit. Huge malt backbone present as well. The alcohol is there, but you’d never come close to guessing 21%. Very sugary malts overpower the hops, but everything is so big. This beer bludgeons the palate, and I like it! Very balanced for its size.

12 oz bottle. Pours cloudy amber/copper with beige head. The aroma is very sticky hops and is quite fruity. The flavor is completely unapologetic. Strong resinous piney hops blast away, with some stray fruity notes. Sticky, toasty malt is quite strong, too. Oh, and that alcohol is very noticeable. Maybe not enough to guess 21%, but a hell of a lot of it. It dries out considerably in the finish and aftertaste, which is a feat considering the serious malty sweetness. This is pretty intense. I would love to age one for the decade it recommends to see what happens. Definitely not a session beer, this.

opaque amber pour with a tiny ring of froth. fresh hop scent with a hint of alcohol in the background. thick malt taste that’s sweet like caramel. flavor that’s mostly alcohol that coats your stomach.

Draft, 4/01/2008 @ Uber. Dark amber with no head. Pungent grassy/floral hop aroma ala 60 Min but 5x. Thick oily mouthfeel. Heavy sweet malt flavors with massive pungent hops and a noticeable alcohol presence but actually no more than a typical Barleywine. Pretty much a huge hoppy barley wine here, and dangerously drinkable on tap .

Yellow orange appearance with a large head. Flavor is citrusy. Some hop bitterness is present. It hides the alcohol better than I expected. Pretty good but I prefer the 90 minute. RERATE : This was terrible and defines cloying. Im not sure why I even thought it was pretty good. Syrupy garbage.
