Commercial Description:
Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45°P, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continually hopped with high alpha American hops, dry-hopped every day in the fermenter for a month, and aged for a month on whole leaf hops, 120 Minute IPA is by far the strongest IPA ever brewed. And at 21% ABV and 120 IBU’s, you can see why we are calling this the Holy Grail for Hopheads. Editors note: ABV reduced down to 18% in 2009.

I was pretty skeptical about this one, but decided to see what all the hype was about. Surprisingly, it turned out to be a fairly nice brew. The alcohol was not very noticeable in the flavor but, based on my extensive drinking experience, I can verify the 20+% content (I got a little dizzy). The aroma was inviting, and the flavor was a bit syrupy, but tasty. The best time to consume this beer is just before bedtime.

Bottle sampled with Stegosaurus. Pours copper with a beige head. Aroma of caramel, citrus, and hops. Flavor is caramel, fruit, caramel, and well balanced hops. Great beer.

Bottle sampled with beerded_one pours copper with a beige lasting head one finger thick. Aroma of caramel mlats, citrusy hops, and slight dark fruits to the nose. Flavor is mostly sweet, caramel, fruit; the followed up by citrus & slight bittering hops. Good body, excellent brew.

RERATE: This is almost indrinkable. Massive thickness is too burning and medicine-like. Hops are piney but seemingly unfresh and garbagey. No possible way I could drink more than a sip or two. Doesn't deserve to be in the same lineup as the 60 and 90! Original rating:Hop overload. Puckered my face at first sip. Alcohol sneaks through the taste but makes itself known to my stomach and brain! Many malty flavors do make thier way to the front but it's mostly just a hop monster with a ton of alcohol. I'll take the complexity of the 90 minute over this one anyday, but a fun beer to try at a tasting, as was the case at the Ratebeer Summer Gathering 2003. Thanks to whoever paid the $20 for the bottle at the Map Room.

I drank this from the bottle at the GBBF and thought I'd had it before so only took brief notes. Real hoppy challenging aroma, piney, citrussy. Sweet biscuity malts, shortbread, strong grapefruit citirc finsh.

The bottle looks really good, the beer in the glass also. Very complex aroma, velvet and alcohol. Tastes modest velvety, then intense hoppy and strong alcoholic, very intense. Very scratchy finish. Great experience! Thanks to jjpm74 for that bottle!

<!-- i -->Bottled on 03/30/06<!-- /i -->. Aroma of piney hops as soon as I cracked the bottle, but after it poured a slightly hazy copper with a small off-white head, the hop aroma was a little more subdued. Aroma was more grapefruity and resiny hops, carmelized sugar, toffee malts--and of course, alcohol. Very very sweet beer--not near as bitter as I expected. Taste of whole hops throughout, and very brown sugary molasses sweet. It never gets very bitter at all. I’ve had APA’s more bitter than this. Considering the 21%ABV, it is covered up quite well. Mild carbonation, very syrupy. Good, but you can only take them one at a time.

Pours a deep amber with a very light white head. There is extremely strong smell of alcohol and hops. Knew this one was gonna be strong. Tastes of pine hops with a nice mix of sweet malts. Very strong. Had to drink in moderation. Fantastic IPA, wish it was easier to get.
