Commercial Description:
Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45°P, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continually hopped with high alpha American hops, dry-hopped every day in the fermenter for a month, and aged for a month on whole leaf hops, 120 Minute IPA is by far the strongest IPA ever brewed. And at 21% ABV and 120 IBU’s, you can see why we are calling this the Holy Grail for Hopheads. Editors note: ABV reduced down to 18% in 2009.

355 ml bottle from a trade with MaltOMeal. pours hazy brownish-orange with a small off white head but enough carbonation to keep some the head going till the end. aromas are big citrus hops along with lots of sweet malts. kinda smells like a hoppy barly wine with orange. flavours are big and intense. the malts and hops hit you at the same time and the flavours stays and slowly melts away. mouthfeel is smooth with no traces of the 21% abv. very enjoyable and i wish i had more. thanks MaltOMeal!

Yum. This was great. Split with a friend. I thought there would be more hops, but I think the alcohol covers them up. Lots of caramel taste, not enough grapefruit. Thick and malty taste. Took me an hour to drink half the 12oz. Loved it!

Bottle. Wow. This isn’t just a beer. This is an experience. It is very extreme. It tooks me like two hours to drink this but I could probably have done it in one. One sip at a time is feels like one beer at a time. Like all dogfish IPA’s it has that sweet maple like flavor to balance out the insane hops. The alchohol passes off very well. Personally I just prefer the bright citrus hop flavor. Dogfish has a maltyness which is interesting but different and even if I don’t like it as much at least it is a distinctive mark of thier work.

Bottle. Pours an orangish color and cloudy with a medium head that disappears quickly. Lacing is excellent. Aromas of citrus, wine, and a bit of grapefruit. Creamy start, oily in the mouth, and sticky finish. LIvely carbonation but surprisingly smooth for such a powerful beer. Tastes of citrus, grapefruit, with a very nice aftertaste of port. Almost the perfect taste for a beer!

12oz Bottle. A great beer to go with a special meal. Unbelievably Hoppy taste, but the bitterness fades very quickly towards the end. Certainly not an everyday beer, but excellent nonetheless.

12 oz bottle from Casanova. Pours a cloudy pale orange color with a small wispy head that sticks around. Aroma is... unique as hell to say the least. Obviously the 18% ABV comes through in the aroma with some sweet, malty, fruity notes. Flavor is massive and very complex. Sweet, malty and fruity like the aroma, very hoppy but shockingly this doesn’t taste very bitter to me. Mouthfeel is thick, chewy, syrupy and every similar adjective you can think of, but all in a good way. This stuff just oozes down your throat. This stuff is very different than what I expected, but just as good as I had hoped for nonetheless. Not for the weak of heart but should be saved for the open minded.

Enjoyed at cellar temp. Pours a golden orange. Nose is intense, banana comes to mind, as well as citrus and pine. Taste is wild, as expected. Shockingly sweet, perhaps too sweet, maybe to counterbalance the alcohol. Hops are present but not as much as expected, the alcohol was promininent. Finishes sweet, very mild bitterness. After finishing the bottle, i was a wee-bit dizzy, lol. Overall impressed with the beer, will definetly try again, i feel this beer is the extreme, and you must appreciate it.

Dark copper/light amber in color. Nice two-finger head of light tan foam. Very good retention and the lacing is nicely sticky. Good hops aroma. Floral, grassy and slightly piney. Big sweet caramel maltiness. Light booziness, though not as much as expected as expected, considering it’s over-the-top ABV. Big butterey biscuits. Very sweet and hoppy, overall. Mmmmm. Good stuff. More like a barleywine with hoppy undertones than an IPA, really. Notes of caramel and raisin from the big malty backbone. Bits of tropical fruit and hints of vanilla. Nice underbelly of big hops spice. Molasses mixing with grapefruit, sprinkled generously with various spices. An odd combo, to be sure, but one that I like. The alcohol provides a nice warming touch, while not being in the way of your enjoyment. This is a brew with a body that I can love. Big, thick and viscous. It coats the inside of your mouth, along with everything else, on it’s way down. Oily, almost verging on sludge-like. Excellent! This is extremely drinkable, IMO. Sadly, at 21% abv, or thereabout, most people could only down two or three in a sitting before being unable to function. The alcohol content, while I totally love it, brings down it’s overall drinkability score. But please Dogfish and Sam, never EVER change (or stop making) this brew! Truly excellent.
