The aroma is that of a tropical margarita (tequila) and butterscotch. The flavor reveals dates, necterines and a citrusy butterscotch. The hops was quite tame under the sweet, sweet malts. The palate was chewy and smooth with a muted liquor finish. The whole experience is flavor packed and enjoyable. I nominate this beer as the flagship of American Strong Ales and certainly prefer it to the Arrogant Bastard. This is not a beer, it is a work of art. desurfer (1068), Pinellas Park, Florida, USA

Aroma is dominated by alcohol, slight malt character as well. Wow! Huge flavor again dominated by alcohol, also very sweet and smooth, but not hoppy like I would have expected. Very intriguing beer, but not an everyday drink. Good choice for my 150th, and a good beer overall. This further solidifies Dogfish Head as my favorite brewery. ericnixon (719), Northampton, Massachusetts, USA

I was expecting to get hit with the giant mega hoppiness that's found in Smuttynose's Big A IPA, or Stone's Ruination...but that wasn't the case at all. It was wonderfully smooth and well-balanced. Ok, it might have been hopped like a mofo, but it was so perfectly crafted that it didn't assult me with overt hoppiness. An amazing sipping beer. DragonStout (1380), Pataskala, Ohio, USA

Yeah, it’s strong, but it’s not too strong where the alcohol takes away from the flavor. Pours amber/golden with an offwhite head. Have a couple of theses and you are set for the night! brstp (201), Princeton, New Jersey, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jan 24, 2008 Bottle bought in spring 2006. Great bright orange color, whitish head. Aroma of peaches, grapefruit, peat, honey, pine. Sweet, tingly flavor of citrus--name a citrus fruit, it’s in there. Pine hops give the pucker but honestly it’s not too bad. Maybe the age has smoothed the beer out. There’s an underlying alcohol base but it’s not distracting. This is hop honey syrup and it’s oh so good. blankboy (3239), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 12, 2005 Bottle shared with HogTownHarry & tupalev -- courtesy of Dave B. I had heard this beer was good but never did I imagine it was this good! Pours a clear, slightly bubbly, orange-amber with a small lasting foamy white head. The aroma: hopjuice baby! Oh yeah, I friggin’ love it -- I am going to just sniff this all night. Sniff. Sniff. The flavour: Holy Sh!t! Can a beer taste better than this? the following superlatives come to mind: Excellent! Impessive! Delicious!...you get the idea. If I must describe it further then I would say the flavour is a wonderful blend of juicy hops and toasty malt and is surprisingly well balanced. I freaked when I saw this was 21%, I exclaimed loudly "There’s no way!", hell I’m still shocked as you would never know it by the taste. Palate is syrupy and has a Barley Wine texture. Quite simply one of the best beers I’ve ever had and I’d argue one of the best beers period. 11thMan (20), Dennison, Minnesota, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Oct 10, 2006 This is a very huge beer, more of a brandy or rum then a beer. It pours very amber with very little carbonation. The warming alcohol subdues the massive hops. The finish is oily and smooth.
