Very balanced aroma of hops and a slight touch of sweetness. Just to smell it you wouldn’t know it had as high an ABV as it does. Initial taste is surprisingly a blast of sweet malt rather than a hoppy punch in the face. Very sweet and creamy taste that gives way to the hoppy backbone that you know is coming. Not as bitter a hoppy finish as I was expecting, but quite delicious. clingman71 (254), Centerville, Ohio, USA

Tons of sweet malt aroma along with huge amounts of fruity hop aroma. Mouthfeel is enormous. How can it be this big and malty and hoppy at the same time? Very sweet, fruity, citrusy hops. It finishes with a serious hop flavor, but with a malty finish as opposed to dry as most Imp. IPAs are. It doesn’t hide the 20% very well, but it is so flavorful that I hardly noticed the burn. Even with the 120 IBU and 20% it is smooth. A contradiction in a bottle, I love it !!!!!!!! Alcoholist (570), Peoria, Illinois, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 25, 2004 Deep amber color. Nose is strongly hops, sweet malt and alcohol. Flavor is malty sweet with a strong hop bite at the finish. Alcohol is extremely well hidden and only really rears it's head in the aftertaste. Something really special! Delightful deep amber color. Head is small and dies quickly but leaves lacing to entice the spirit. Aroma of apples and screwdrivers(!). Now the plunge..for the taste. The heavens burst forth! A heavenly host flies down, a choir of angels sings triumphant and blast on trumpets as Jesus himself comes down to bless the bitter sensing tastebuds of my mouth. 5th sip taken 10 minutes in....already my legs tingle and my cheeks feel flushed. The thickness and hoppyness and deliciousness and dankness are almost too much to stand. I bow before Dogfish Head for creating such a heavenly and yet so devilish brew. C’mon cowboy light your fire... SledgeJr (2961), Omaha, Nebraska, USA

Has an amazing floral candy aroma. Ripe bananas emerge as well. Smells like a glass of Tootsie Rolls. This seems much more like a barley wine. The flavor is extreme, dude. Remarkable taste of pineapples. Super syrupy sweet. This is not beer, it’s a glucose tolerance test. Hops? Oh yeah, the kingpin of bitterness all the way down the esophagus, but you wouldn’t know it due to the huge amount of malt. This reminds me of Fruit Stripe gum- the lemon line version. High heat with big big alcohol. Truly an anesthetic for the evening. SSSteve (2073), Atlanta, Georgia, USA

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 25, 2007 On tap @ the Rehoboth Brewpub-Pours a cloudy orange color w/a moderate off white head. Beautifuly presented brew on tap. This one has always scared me a little bit because of the huge alcohol content, expected nothing but overwelming, offensive hops but that’s just not the case. Sweet Belgian aroma of floral Hops. Has a sweet Belgian flavor up front; cane sugar, apricot, figs, but the hop bite is there. You need to be careful w/this one; it’s actually quite drinkable, alcohol isn’t overwelming, It does warm you up & you will feel it if you drink this down as fast as you think can; easy to do in the snifter they serve it in. Long, long, long sweet hop finish.
