Also smell sweet malt. The sweetness is of sugar and caramel followed rapidly by the warmth of the alcohol. Definitely a sipping beer. bottle from 05/2007. I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while and brought it out for #200.... it did not disappoint at all... pours a deep red with a thick 1" head. you can smell the hops and alcohol right when you open the bottle. the aroma is very sweet, full of alcohol and a good bit of hops.... I wouldn’t say this is the Holy Grail for hopheads - it’s more in line with a well balanced Barley Wine than an over the top hopped IIPA. 120 min drinks like a fine liquor or wine... the beer thins out on the sides of the glass and has a very solid presence on the palate. The tip of the tongue is almost numbed by the alcohol, while the sides and back feel a solid, low carbonated sweet body. The finish is very syrupy and filled with excellent flavor. This beer may not be worth the price tag of $10 per bottle on a usual basis, but it is very different and absolutely worth trying a couple, aged at different years. mrant (330), New York, USA

Pours a hazy blood red color when held to light. Very dark and murky with a fluffy off-white head. Taste is almost like brandy, strong raisiny taste, thick malty well hopped flavor. Incredible. You really don’t feel the alcohol, but you taste it. Very smooth, leaves a warm fuzzy feeling in my stomach. Literally a warm feeling. Fantastic beer. killjoy966 (222), Washington, USA

Aroma is all floral hops out of the bottle but that changes as soon as it’s poured into the glass. Now it’s all sweet and malty and biscuity. Says it’s an IPA, but tastes more like a barleywine (and a young one at that.) Alcohol is definitely there, but not overpowering. Seems almost to big to take in at one sitting. Wish this one wasn’t so rare so I could give it another go ’round. oteyj (773), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA

Floral, spicy, grassy, citrusy. It has every imaginable hop element and character. Such depth of flavor and aroma amaze me. Flavor is assaulting. An immediate hop bit is followed by a smooth malt character and sweet, lingering mouthfeel. This is truely a masterpiece. BOLTZ7555 (1100), Phoenix, Arizona, USA

Dogfishead embraced the term "extreme beer" and created something that is absurd yet palateable. It is an all-out assault on the senses...intensely sweet and savory aroma...blaze orange body (like that of a hunting vest) with minimal off-white head. Taste consists of grapefruit, brown sugar, and pine...which cleverly masks the insane 21% abv well. Thick and syrupy, this one sticks to the roof of your mouth but isn’t off-putting at all. Amazing beer!!! hoptimus (50), Grand Island, New York, USA

Let me start off by saying that this was the most shocking beer experience I have had since I tried my first Imperial Stout (Stone Russian). Unlike anything I have ever tried as far as flavor and aroma intensity is concerned. The first thing that got me was its incredibly potent aroma. Peach is what came to mind first, followed by apricot and citrus. This beer is well hopped, but was a bit drowned out by intense sweetness including raisin, peach, caramel, apricot and grapefruit notes. Very heavy on the palate, creamy almost. The finish was sugary and it lingered, which was good because this brew must be consumed slowly. Despite the incredibly high alcohol content, it was only truly perceptible in its pleasantly warming finish. All around great brew, although curious and a bit too sweet for a IIPA. I think due to the alcohol content, it also made me a bit queasy, but not in a way that turned me off to it. I will drink this again when my wallet allows me to. caswayno (4), USA does not count | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 19/20 | Jun 24, 2009 Worth the money big taste big buzz love it i drink a couple a month just because i have to.
