Commercial Description:
Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45°P, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continually hopped with high alpha American hops, dry-hopped every day in the fermenter for a month, and aged for a month on whole leaf hops, 120 Minute IPA is by far the strongest IPA ever brewed. And at 21% ABV and 120 IBU’s, you can see why we are calling this the Holy Grail for Hopheads. Editors note: ABV reduced down to 18% in 2009.

Pours hazy amber with ok head. Aroma is simply intense. Floral, spicy, grassy, citrusy. It has every imaginable hop element and character. Such depth of flavor and aroma amaze me. Flavor is assaulting. An immediate hop bit is followed by a smooth malt character and sweet, lingering mouthfeel. This is truely a masterpiece.

How can you possibly not be impressed by this beer??? Dogfishead embraced the term "extreme beer" and created something that is absurd yet palateable. It is an all-out assault on the senses...intensely sweet and savory aroma...blaze orange body (like that of a hunting vest) with minimal off-white head. Taste consists of grapefruit, brown sugar, and pine...which cleverly masks the insane 21% abv well. Thick and syrupy, this one sticks to the roof of your mouth but isn’t off-putting at all. Amazing beer!!!

Thanks to some of my best customers, Brian and Dani, for this one! 12oz brown glass with pry-top. Bottled on 7/8/08. Appearance: Medium amber with a tan/white quarter-inch head. Head recedes quickly and leaves no lacing. Just a scattering of foam on the surface. Nose: Super sweet smelling (I know, I know, you can’t smell sugar). Aromas of dried figs, dates, dried flowers, white rose petals, something like cardboard (not faulted), dried orange peel. Palate: Immediately sweet and round mouthfeel. There’s a little prickle from the alcohol and a warming of the throat after swallowing. Flavors of dried figs, mango withpeel, dried papaya, aloe, hay, lemon, and dusty clay. There’s something that really reminds me of a nice sweet Madeira (Malmsey and Bual blend perhaps?). Notes: Although this monster is super sweet, it hides the 20% abv pretty well. I think there’s a lot of complexity on the palate, more than most critics want to admit to. Yes, it’s unbalanced, but who ever thought they were going for balance with a 2 hour boil and 45-degree plato? I tried this beer two years ago and thought it was marginally "overpriced," but my opinion has changed. I dig it and I think it’s worth the money.

Bottled.. Pours copper with a thin white head.. Aroma is caramel, candy sweetness, floral hops and alcohol.. Taste was caramel, toffee, honey, grapes and a slight woody note.. Full body with good carbonation.. Too easy to drink for the abv.. Had a whole bottle while I watched UFC 100.

Vintage 2007 bottle. Almost 3 years old. Smells of fruits and malt. Smells like curry or Asian 5 spice. Ridiculous number of spices thrown into a bottle. Wow that is rich. Wow. Aging a 120 is the right way to drink a 120. Drinking these fresh is a waste over than to try it that way for the first time. Super uber ripe sweet fruit. Wow. The hops have died. This is a barley wine now. Not a IPA. Notes of Cognac and Sherry. Tastes like fortified wine. Meade like. I’m rating this like it were a barley wine. And a good rating it gets.

Bottle from Frugal Mac’s. Holy hell. I’ll write this before I get any farther down the glass. Blast of hops as soon as I pop the cap, but once it is poured it takes on malty and floral scents. Dark orange gold, no head, nearly opaque. Gorgeous, but loses a point because the final drops land a gross brown on top of it. Okay, the flavor is one of the densest I’ve ever experienced. It’s bitter, but not a sharp bitter like Ruination. It finishes malty, so it reminds more of a barley wine. Overall, very fantastic.
