Washington just recently opened up its doors to beers over 10% abv. The high octane beers have been slowly trickling in for about 3 months now. Pours a very clear light yellowy orange with a tight off white head, with extreme lacing. The aromas are beyond any beer you've ever had. Very little hop and a whole lotta deep, rich malt. The port of beer. The dry hopping is definitly there but overpowered by the massive amount of 2-row Marris Otter. This is not beer. It's barley booze no doubt. It will hit hard so be prepared. I didn't think I would be able to finish it but I have been drinking American strong ale for a few days now so I'm seasoned and bolted down. Definitely not over priced. This is quality stuff. I can see this style becoming a class of its own in the near future. A verrry must try. Long live Dogfishhead. thehoff (569), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA

I’m scared before I even smell this thing. It pours a nice rusty gold with a foamy quarter inch cream head. Smells sweet and malty. The hops are definitely apparent. Thick thick beer. This stuff is like syrup. Nice and sweet with a bitter finish. Warms as it goes down. Flushes my face immediately. This does not taste like an IPA at all to me. Only in the finish. The rest is so sweet. Almost molasses feel and flavor. maxwellboltz (2), Potomac, Maryland, USA does not count | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Aug 18, 2008 Murky. Not much head. Very sweet. It does’t bash you over the head with bitterness, which is a nice change. jason (1623), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA

I don’t think I’ve had such a great experience as I’ve had with this beer as with any other.
I’ve been wanting to try this for a long time and have finally been fortunate enough to find it in singles in Sharkies, a basement/filthy bar, of all places. The Aroma was so sweet and really took over me, sending a pleasant sensation to me. The appearance had me mystified watching the head act as though it was alive. I kept swooshing it back and forth to watch the carbonation great a new head that was utterly fascinating. I think I almost had enough fun looking at this beer as I did drinking it. The flavor almost knocked me on my a$$! Very sweet but under control, nice alcoholic taste that was not over powering and barley noticable for being 21%. If I didn’t already know that this beer was 21% I would not have known while I was drinking it. Very sippable. This is the type of drink I need to have while reading a Hemingway or Thomas Hardy novel or watching Raging Bull. This feels like a ipa version of a barley wine. This may be my new #1. Great, great brew!!! Cheers! ChazMania (412), Pasadena, California, USA

My first 120 experience and I’m well pleased. Aroma is enormous, sweet and complex. Not much of a head and it’s certainly a heavy brew. The flavor, this is nectar for the elites palate. Big fruit, with some honey like sweetness. Lingering flavor of hops and pine. The flavor invades every nerve in your mouth. Criminey, 21%!?!?! Geez, 2 sips and I can already feel a buzz. At that high of alcohol I’m surprised it doesn’t burn like a whiskey or something, it’s pretty darn smooth.

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 17, 2006 Pours a cloudy amber color with a thin white head. Aroma is of citrus, huge hops, malts, dark fruits, and plenty of alcohol. Flavor is pretty much the same, very thick brew and finishes with plenty of alcohol warming. This brew is not for the average beer drinker. Not the most bitter beer i’ve had but it’s pretty close. Some people told me it was too much, perhaps it is but I still find it pretty delicious. swanmann (308), Norman, Oklahoma, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 22, 2008 On draught in Rehoboth, they serve in a snifter filled full. Clear orange garnet with light lacing. Very sweet aroma, honey and caramel. Flavor is the same, not so much hoppy as very sweet. The hops do come through, but this is a BIG brew. It’s sort of a paradox because the aromas will develop with warming, but drinkability almost depends on chilled and carbonated. Handle with care. jj21 (84), Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, USA

Poured aggresively into chalice and produced fantastic 1-2" head!! Copper in color with fluffy off-white head and slight carbonation. Aroma from the hops was not as prominent as I thought it would be. Oaky alcohol on the nose woth fruit. I was expecting an absolute hop bomb but it wasn’t. Great citrus tones with a little grassiness to it. The maltiness balanced this beer so well. Very thick mouthfeel. Definately looking forward to the other bottle.
