| 1.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 5/20 | Jul 17, 2004 Pours a golden color with little head. Aroma is.. is... umm... fruity. Apple and pear, perhaps. Taste is.. oh god... the taste is almost of rotten pear. It is bitter and tart beyond belief. I’m sure it has a currant taste, but I’ve never tasted a currant so I can’t say for sure. I have had tart beers before, but they just make your face pucker and ask "what the hey?" This makes your head jerk around and scream "What the hell?!" bubslang (438), Kentwood, Michigan, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 11, 2004 Poured a goldenish copper with a small white head. Pleasant fruity aroma with some nice malt notes. Dark currant flavor, that is moderately sweet, but not overbearing. Medium-bodied with a nice malt backbone and a touch of hops as well. A nice and refreshing change of pace type of brew. kwoeltje (1333), Manchester, Missouri, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Jul 11, 2004 Hazy gold with rapidly fading head. Fruity aroma (raspberry/apricot). Somewhat sweet syrupy fruit flavor (currants). A little salty at the finish. mickblueeyes (106), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 11, 2004 This yellowy-gold beer has a light foamy head with some lacing. The nose is light with stewed red currants and clear presence of rich, toasted malt. The palate is nicely astringent with some blood/copper notes and a touch of underripe plum which fades into the lemony, but cleansing finish. A touch of the copper note lingers. An excellent summer beer. Silphium (2160), Haslett, Michigan, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 5, 2004 Updated: Jan 18, 2005Well, Dogfish Head is finally available in Michigan! Au Courant poured a hazy yellow-orange with a thin off-white head. Currant aroma (smelled somewhat like raspberry), quite tart and vegetably. Flavor was sweet and sugary like most Dogfish Head beers, with currant flavors that were by no means overwhelming. Perhaps a touch of earthy hops and a hint of biscuity malt shine through, but overall the palate is rather muddled and too sweet.
Update 18 January 2005. Picked up a new bottle of this beer and it is now purple! Still not impressed by the flavor, however, which is mostly tangy fruit skin and earthiness. Indra (2040), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 2, 2004 Expectedly fruity aroma, gently tart and sweet with hints of wheat malt and notes of berry, currant, cherry, pineapple along with some faint honey and doughy yeast. Lightly hazy golden color with a receding head. Flavor is balanced nicely, again fruity, lightly tart and sweet with fruity, grainy wheat malt, but none of these characteristics are overriding. Seems a good blend. Body is medium-full (unusual for a fruit beer), the palate thin, lightly acidic and bubbly, somewhat resembling champagne. This is actually pretty tasty, I’m surprised to learn this is a winter seasonal when it seems to be working so well as an aperitif in early summer. Thanks to jeffc. JCW (1262), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Jun 27, 2004 Updated: Aug 14, 2005This beer has some lambic qualities to it. Hazy, golden colored. Aroma is fruity like a melon, and sour apples mixed with something tart. Flavor is fruity, sour with a slight salty finiish. Good beer, but not what I was hoping for.
