Bottle. Pink small fizzy head that mostly diminished with poor lacing, minimal carbonation and a burgundy hue. Aroma was sweet, sour, tart and tangy. Flavor was not very pleasant even for a fruit beer IMMHO - sweet, acidic, sour, tart, tangy. Tingly, sour, tart, and dry mouthfeel. Medium body. Not impressed.

This beer was very dry in flavor and palate, which I found quite pleasant. It was a tad more sour than I would have liked, and even though it was dominant, the currant flavour seemed...hesitant...if that makes any sense. I didn’t get much "beer" character our of this one. For those who enjoy currants, this is definitely worth trying and I found it enjoyable, but not as robust as some other fruit beers.

12 oz. bottle. Burgundy colour with a slight white foam. Cherry like aroma that reminds me somewhat of Baby Duck Sparkiling Wine. Wine like currant flavour with a dry dusty and almost leathery finish. Medium bodied, dry mouthfeel.

flavor and aroma were great. tasted fruity, duh, and crisp. I’m surprised this beer scored so low. Not dogfish head’s best - but still better than most other beers.

Found a single 2003 bottle at a distributor. Smell has slight hint of currants but not a lot. The taste is very distinct. Its not heavy or fruity but refreshing. and you gotta love Dogfish, they like to make everything as strong as possible.

(12 oz bottle: Obtained in trade with Eyedrinkale, thanks Mike!) After a bit of research, I’m certain this is the December, 2003 bottling, not the apparently nasty purple batch that Dogfish Head put out in December, 2004. I’ve had this cellaring for over a year, and the entire bottle -- glass and label -- is all moldy and gross. The beer pours a slightly hazy, dark golden color with a fizzy, off-white head, but the head dissipates fairly rapidly. My only experience with currants is with fancy imported black currant juice that is insanely concentrated and acidic (but incredibly yummy!), and the aroma is almost overpowering. This beer is considerably less aromatic than that juice, and in comparison is only mildly fruity and somewhat tart. It’s not sweet, not even a little, and there is just a hint of doughiness. But the flavor is fantastic. This is delightfully tart and fruity, tart enough to make my mouth pucker a bit and cause my jaw muscles to tighten up, but certainly not to the tartness level of lambics. There is a slight bit of breadiness hiding behind the tart currant flavor which I’m attributing to aging, but it’s so mild, I barely notice it. The more I drink of this, the more I’m reminded of an inexpensive but bone dry Champagne. It has that same tart, acidic fruitiness and, light body, and gentle effervescent mouthfeel. It’s extremely refreshing, something I could easily drink a few bottles of without getting sick of the flavor or tiring out my palate. But then again, I love Champagne and I love currant juice. And this tastes more like Champagne to me than beer. It’s a shame they screwed with the recipe for the 2004 batch and apparently ruined the beer. Maybe they changed the type of currant? Maybe this was brewed with white currants? One can only hope that future releases of this beer will resemble this batch because it’s been thoroughly enjoyable.

A red beer with a pink head. The aroma is sweet with powerful notes of black currant - and so is the flavor, but in the flavor there’s hints of acidity, and the body is thin. Not impressed.

a nice light courant flavored beer. Perfect description on the bottle. A very light ale with the cherry and corant flavors. Needed a little more
