Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Pours an amber color with a slightly colorful tint. Aroma is full of vanilla with some graham cracker and lots of berries. Flavor is almost like desert. Lots of berries and vanilla.

Thanks to moejuck for this bonus beer, the rating is well overdue. Pours...I forget exactly how cause I didn’t take notes on that. Aroma of tangy wheat, pungent earthy yeast, slight grapeskin fruit, and a bit of berry as it warms. Subtle overall. Tastes of wheat, caramel, pretty pungent yeast, hay, chardonnay, hints of clove. Cloying caramel and wheat finish, not much in hops. Any hint of berries is incredibly vague and only noticable in the aroma. Medium bodied, not much heat, and kinda slick in texture. Definitely more of an imperial wit than a fruit beer. Okay.

a- pours a somewhat cloudy rose/amber hue, two fingers of off-white creamy head and fair lacing throughout s- nose is surprisingly dominated by caramel malt with very subtle tones of the fruits after which it is named (raspberry and blueberry), light alcohol presence is in contrast with 11% abv t- initial taste is of sweet malts followed by a brief fruit presence, aftertaste is subtle and of very short duration, somewhat reminiscent of a belgian style but only in passing m- light-bodied and watery mouthfeel, lively carbonation that is a little overwhelming. d- rather underwhelming offering, particularly for a fruit beer. I dont think i could even tell this was a ’fruit beer’ in a blind taste test. This was good for a group beer tasting, but I probably won’t go in for round two anytime soon.

22 oz bottle the fruit taste is predominate but did not kill the taste of this beer. Good balance of hops with the fruit not my normal like for a beer but a nice change.

2006 Bottle - Pours a light amber with no head...aroma is belgian yeast and faint berry...flavour is similar, yeasty, a tad spicy, dry fruit...alcohol is pretty well hidden...good experience beer...

Bottle: Pours a golden copper color with a thin white head. Nose is certainly fruity, but also malty and bready. Kind of dry and some faded hops. Tastes malty with a light fruity presence. Slight blackberry, again dry and lightly floral. Thanks ditmier.

This is the second bottle of this beer I have had, and I was not that impressed with it. The beer seemed too sour and tart for my liking. It pours very nice and clean: clear copper color, very attractive, and not but a thin trace of head on it. Aroma is a bit of grass and sugary syrup. It doesn’t really tell much from the beer by the aroma. The flavor doesn’t come off as bitter and sour as before. It’s much more refreshing. I let this sit out to warm up a bit and it lets the flavors come out more. There is some (surprisingly) mild fruitiness, yeasty flavors and a tad bit of tart. This really helps once it warms up. More of the bitter berry flavor comes out as this goes on. Quite a tasty treat, but not as good as the red and white.
