Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

750, capped. Thanks, BitBucket! Pours a dark amber with a thin dirty-white head. Sharp vinous blueberry nose, but dissipates rather quickly and settles into a mild fruitiness with some rather unexpected red wine overtones. Blueberries and sweet red wine grapes on the mid-palate, and there they are again on the finish, too. This bottle had had several months to mellow, if that’s any comment on the relative mildness of the aromas and flavors. Nice, but nothing special.

Bottle courtesy of Butters. Pours medium amber with and off white head. Aroma of dark wild berries, malt, and a tad amount of alcohol. Medium bodied with a semi- light Belgian texture. Flavor of blueberry, blackberry, and belgian malts. Not much bitterness, but enough to keep it in balance. Honey, candi sugar accents on the finish. Decent

Oxidationfest Tasting at illinsmittys. Pretty pinkish red pour with wispy white head. Aroma has alcohol in the nose. Flavor is fuity. Medium thin body, with some carbonation but not much. Boozy bitter finish. Actually, didn’t enjoy it all that much.

Bottle: Not impressed with this beer at all. I like fruit beers, but this tasted too much like fruit punch. Really no flavor and no finish. Pass

Smells of corn and berries. Reddish-colored. I was actually looking forward to this, but found it disappointing. I wonder if I got a bad bottle.

Bottle from Franklins. Cloudy orange red. Sweet black berry and blue berry aroma and taste with a nice tart crispness.

A pleasant surprise. I love Sam C does at Dogfish and will try anything that he brews, but wasn’t all that excited about this one. Finally opened it last night and paired it with mild sushi and salad... really enjoyed it. Copper-ish color with a hint of bluish head and bluish twinge to the body. Maybe my mind is convincing me of the blue! Aroma is malty backed with some fruity tartness. Flavor was smooth - not overly tart like many fruit beers. A bit slick on the palate. Would try again.

Pours a nice blue color with a light bluish/off white head. Aroma is of lots of blueberries, and some sourness of blackberries as weel. Alcohol also in there. Flavor is just nice fresh berries, not aftificial at all, and finishes with a nice alcohol warmth without being too strong.
