Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Bottled 2/12/2007 (a year before drinking): While I expected scents of dark fruit due to the blueberries and blackberries, I actually got more red fruit (cherry, currant, blood orange) and plenty of spices with a touch of yeast. In the mouth it is medium-bodied and hides the 10% alcohol extremely well. The fruit shows through to the palate, transitioning to some yeast in the dry finish. Not something I’d want to drink everyday but interesting nonetheless.

old rating: 6/3/5/2/10 - 2.6 ( 2/25/2008 ) pour is a clear, reddish-orange with a small egg-shell head, and a little lacing. smell of berry, yeast, sour malt, some citrus, spice, and pepper. taste is sweet and tart, thin, berry is definitely in there, sour malt in the back, and spice, end is sour, dry, and a little bitter.

750 ml bottle from mcbackus! Nose of caramel and light berry fruitiness; hazy amber-red with a medium beige head; flavor has berries (more than the nose) toffee, and caramel malt; finish is slightly sweet! Drinkable and allright, glad I tried it this once.

750 mL bottle - this one had been sitting around since the fall as i’m not that big on fruit beers; yet this was a tasty one; pours clear and light amber with thin white head; blueberry aromas mixed with stale hops and yeast; flavors are mild by DFH standards, but that was nice for a change; drinks smooth and slightly malty; fruit flavors are at a pleasant level that is never overpowering

Bottle tasting @ danish beerhouse, copenhagen Beerfestival 2007: Pours ruby / brown with a small white head. Very sour fruity, warm & peppery taste. Fruity (blueberry), spritzy & fresh. This was one of last samples and remembering it to be quite violent towards me - a bit rough/harsh. OK

Capped 750 ml. bottle, bottling date on the shoulder of the bottle (02/12/07), sampled in a wine glass. L: Burnished red orangey copper with a creamy head of beige foam that slowly settled into a sudsy layer. Light amount of lace circles the glass. S: Blueberry juice and a light tartness of raspberries, earthy spicy yeast, bare traces of floral, spicy hops and toasted pale husky grain malts, I like the restrained berry fruitiness, to me, it gives the aroma a nice balance. As it warms a subtle banana-like fruitiness comes out, along with traces of powdery yeast. F&T: Creamy crisp moderate body, a nice rounded feel in the mouth. Where I liked the restrained fruitiness in the aroma, in the taste the berry flavors are a tad too restrained. There is a perceived tartness from the black raspberries without much of their pungent taste, the natural sweetness of blueberries with just a generic tasting berry juiciness. The yeast and malts play the major role in the taste, the earthy spiciness of the yeast, caramelized sugar and toasted husky grains from the malts. A light lemony hop taste before turning spicy in the end. Quite dry in the finish, lingering tastes of the generic berry juice, earthy yeast and malty grains. I didn’t find this as enjoyable as the Red & White, but still it is pretty decent and obviously well crafted, well worth trying.

Bottle. 2007 vintage. Pours a deep, clear ruby. Small, thin, white head. Aroma of dark fruits and wet straw. Body is a bit overly carbonated. Flavor is funky. The fruit taste is really muted and wheaty, bready malts dominate the back end of the taste. Finish is dry and peppery. Alchol is well hidden throughout, even as the beer warms up.
