Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Have been looking forward to drinking this since I purchased it a few weeks ago. Red body with a small white head. No lasting power and no lacing on the glass. Nose of blueberries, dark berries, malt and sugars. Very light on the fruit aroma, wish it was more apparent. Flavors of blueberries and sugar sweetness, again not as apparent as it should be. Everything is just a bit off, which leads you to believe this could have been a really great beer. Finish is sweet and of medium length. Medium bodied, slightly spritzy feeling and with a good amount of carbonation. Disappointing.

Bottle; Poured a ruby clear color with not much head. Aroma of fruit, a little artificial; and some sweetness and hops peppering. Flavor was tart, with a pretty good fruit flavor. Spice provided a peppery mouthfeel.

750ml bottle. Via trade with someone and I cannot remeber who, but thanks to whoever you may be. Perhaps Axllives, not sure. Porus ruby with a 2 finger light pink head. Aroma is sweet and somewhat alcoholic. The taste is lightly sweet with a big belgian alcohol taste that lies in weight behind it. Can’t really taste the blackberries or blueberries directly which is a bit sad. Good brew not as good as I’d had hoped.

THOUGHTS: This one really got better was it warmed. Not nearly as much berry as I would have thought. This seemed like a beer just made for the sake of making it. It wasn’t the usual Dogfish Head greatness. Not a bad beer at all, just not as good as I was expecting. There was berry flavor but not overly sweet at all. Hides alcohol well. A good beer, but not the best Dogfish Head by far. Reminded me a little of Red and White, but was not nearly as good. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a meium organgeish red with a small to average head that was off-white and slightly on the pind side and left virtually no lacing. There was also great carbonation to watch. The aroma was moderately yeasty and lightly fruity, which I’m guessing was the blueberries and blackberries. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, while the finish was moderately to heavily sweet and slightly sour with a short duration. The body was medium and dry with fixxy carbonation.

Bottled. Orange and reddish coloured. Quite clear. Off white head. Sweetish and fruity aroma with some notes of berries. Flavour has alcohol and berries and the sweetness is countered nicely by a vague sourness. Is medium bodied. Sweetish end.

5/19/07: Bottle.
Ruby red body with a slightly off white head which is big and thick. Nice lace. Fruity aroma. Sweet berries, caramel malt, wheat and black cherry. Light hop finish and smooth.
