It smells like 90 minute but woody, not quite creamy oak but reminiscent of old timber, and certainly a much more mature brew. Flavor was very grapefruit, caramelized malts, some chocolate, subdued fruitiness like banana but just barely perceptible, slight vanilla, and again old timber that has probably been used since it adds just a hint of je ne sais pas and earthiness. Palate was extremely reminiscent of an abbey dubbel with some slight carbonation in the finish. Very good beer, I’m thinking Ratebeer could use a oaked IPA category now. cking (1041), North Canton, Ohio, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 27, 2009 Fine brew, has a lot going on in a good, subtle fashion. Copper in color with a large lasting head and thick lacing. Wonderful medley of aromas from caramel to citrus with heavy woody and flowery scents. The beer has a boozy kick then settles into a drawn out smoothness. Good bitterness, although I’d say the hops are giving way to a rounded sweetness. Flavors mirror the aroma. Woody and earthy with lemon and grapefruit. Evergreen followed by toast and caramel. Oh my this is a fine treat. marcus (1896), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | May 20, 2009 This hazy copper ale poured with a decent beige head and a few floaties. There is a sharp citrus aroma and a flat but tasty malt flavor with lots of oak and some faint hop bitterness. This thing is really complex and hard to describe. I’ve never had a DIPA that tasted anything like this. DiabolikDUB (144), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 19, 2009 Poured from 12oz. Bottle into Snifter glass.
Pours a medium copper color with an inch of slightly off-white head that dissipates in to a fine ring around the glass. Aroma has sweet malts, slight oak and a touch of booze. Flavors include caramel malt, raisins, a bit of oak flavor and the alcohol has a warming sensation and even more so as it warms up. It has a chewy medium body. This is a nice IPA although for the money I’d say there are other options that I’d rather go with. FlssmrBrewAlum (1177), Lisle, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 18, 2009 12 oz bottle courtesy of GAManiac. Thanks, Grant. Pours a clear reddish amber, no haze, nice fiery hues, with moderate offwhite head, good carbonation, laces some. Aromas are very nice, gumball and lemon zest, some tropicals, with some grapefruit, florals, and overall, inviting citrusy hop bouquet. Initial is medium bodied, a bit sweet, lending, some caramel and pale malts, sweetness, citrusy and candy like gumball, a bit syrupy in consistency, with tropical fruit, taking on a touch of pine and more florals in the finish. Moderate bitterness, hops are a little faded or just not strong. Still, I like the malt profile on this, and the aroma is heavely. Body and flavors are a bit off, but still good. Warms going down. A decent DIPA. thefrutigers (100), , Arizona, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 18, 2009 Bottle: Poured orange with slight thin head. Smell sweet and malty with ethanol. Flavor was sweet with slight bitterness and a light wood flavor that seemed to balance out the sweetness. Dogfish Head beers tend to be on the sweeter side, which is something I personally like about their beers. Well done!
