Commercial Description:
The elusive brew is made from pilsner malt and amber malt with an original gravity of 26.5?P, yielding an 11% abv. It's hopped with Warrior and Glacier varieties. Primary fermentation takes place in open vessels using two yeast strains, one American and one English. For added complexity, the beer is conditioned on barrel staves of French Oak for four months before being dry hopped with Glacier at the rate of a half-pound per barrel. This elixir is then blended 50/50 with 90 Minute IPA. After blending, the beer will measure 80 IBU and 10% abv. Bottled in corked bottles through Michael Jackson’s rare beer club by late November 04 and available in 12 ounce full distribution in early January 05.

Hop nose all the way. Totally unbalanced in taste with extreme hops, alcohol, and burnt sugar/syrup. The particular flavors are there, and they work by themselves, but it’s a sum of parts. An example of what Dogfish Head’s extreme brewing can sometimes do, and the mixing is evident here.

This was actually a lot better then I thought it would be. Pours a nice clear copper color with an off white head. Nice floral, piney aroma. The beer had a very nice hop profile, but it was a lot sweeter than the 90 Minute IPA. I thought it had just the right amount of oak flavor/aroma in there as well. Very solid, glad I gave it a try.

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Jacksonville, FL; priced at $3.79 for a single or $10.99 for a 4 pack. 2008 bottle. Pours a nice dark copper color with a nice head. Aroma is complex with hops and some interesting oak notes from the aging. Taste also reflects the aging as well, adds some vanilla like tones to this, to include a nice hoppy taste with a floral finish. Very nice beer.

2008 bottle. Creamy head breaks down to wispy lacing. Pours dark amber. Can sense some alcohol in the beginning, but vanishes by the end. Definitely can tell the affect of the oak-aging; adds a vanilla-y finish that nearly evens out the bitterness to the point that the bitterness quickly fades from the palate. Not much in the way of an aroma besides a sweetness. Not a flowery IPA by any means. I think I can tell that it’s been blended with the 90min.

poured cloudy amber color, tiny tan bubbles floating on top. sweet floral nose, with hint of hops and smoke. creamy caramel in the flavor, with some bitter hops under thesurface. smoke and vanilla notes too. oily, creamy mouth feel. didn’t quite understand the target they were shooting for here, but i enjoyed the experience nonetheless. the 10% abv is well hidden.

extra thrown in from beerbill. 2008. rich copper color with a small off white head. it’s got decent spotty lacing and a film that lasts. smells sweet right out of the gates... combined with booze, raisins, wood, bubblegum, yeast and light pine hops. the palate is far too sweet for the small bitter hop payoff. citrus, pine and earth combine with sugar, sugar and a hint of sugar. light bitter finish and weird unpleasant aftertaste. medium body with a lot of stickiness. 7/4/4/2/13/3.0

on tap at papago... completely different brew... nose is similar to the bottled version... caramel, fruit, earthy spice, yeast and an alcohol sting. the palate has dramatically changed... sugar has calmed...toasted coconut, golden raisins, oak, green hoppiness, yeast bitterness and a clean finish. medium to full bodied, creamy, smooth and surprisingly good. what happened? 7/4/7/4/16/3.8

12 oz bottle. Had this before the Immort Ale, and didnt really like this one, but I was drunk so it may require another re-rate.

From bottle at Smokin’ Joes. Fruity, juicy, oak, vanilla, apricots. Superbly fragrant nose, smooth and intoxicating. Can’t stop sniffing. Golden amber clear body, brilliant, with foamy off-white lacing head. Medium-heavy body, with meium carbonation and alcohol warming. Starts with big alcohol hit, mild vanilla and light brown sugar. Very sweet, with sugary toffee notes, oak smoothness, and light butterscotch. Finishes smooth and creamy, with Irish whiskey and caramel. Smooth sweet oaky finish and warming after. For an impy IPA, not much hop bitterness.
