ksurkin (56), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Apr 22, 2008 12oz from G&G, poured into a snifter. pours a dark amber/brown, unfiltered, with a very small, white head. aroma is very sweet, similiar to the 90min. i pick up scents of grapefruit, hops, melon, and some malt along with a hint of alcohol. oak flavors really show up in the flavor. starts off sweet and hoppy with some hints of vanilla and oak. backend has good bitterness and is quite long lasting. mouthfeel is very smooth and drinkable and i can’t detect much of the 10%. overall, a very good specialty ale.
fidel (146), Livermore, California, USA Sep 1, 2008 Thanks, AgentSteve. Thick dark amber, citrus, wood, alcohol, caramel, spice, fruity, little hop, dry finish. greenleaf (89), Florida, USA Sep 1, 2008 bottle 12oz. pouts a deep copper with a small off white head. nose is berry and citrus. a tasty double IPA satan165 (116), River Grove, Illinois, USA Aug 28, 2008 Updated: Aug 29, 2008nose is of extreme oak and alcohol, it even smells syrupy. the flavor rings true to that characteristic and after a sip the nose intensifies. intense warmth off this one, the oaked character seems to have brought the alcohol to the forefront. somehow, its not intolerable at all though. nice dark color typical for the style, fruit (even dark/dried) is at a minimum, wood and booze at a maximum along with hops of course in full force. the sharp bitterness youd expect doesnt come through like a boring old american over hopped IIPA. this has alot of character and intregue, this is my 2nd sample and this one is aged close to 2 years, a wonderous brew that enjoys warmth and provides it as well. darn1207 (255), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 24, 2008 12oz bottle from new beer distributors in manhattan. hazy orange pour with thin off-white head that disappears quickly. aroma is doughy, peach, honey, spices and caramel. whoa - taste not what I was expecting... sticky sweat caramel candy and bourbon (maybe). not much bitter presence at all. nice warmth. definitely complex and more going on than I’ve described here. just doesn’t appeal to my tastes. it does pair well with chocolate and peanut butter oatmeal cookies... if that exact same scenario happens to come up for anybody else. K-7 daknole (697), Plantation, Florida, USA Aug 17, 2008 12 oz bottle...amber pour, small head. aroma of strong malt, cider, maple syrup and some hops. Flavor is malty, booozy, honey and some nice hops. I taste the wood and is less hoppy that I would have expected. very nice.
