Commercial Description:
Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

My first comment on sniffing this: "It smells like Budweiser!" But the proof is in the pudding, or in this case, the tasting and though an American lager-like character is definitely present this is much more complex and sweet (in a good way). Some lovely fruit and unobnoxious floral notes too. I would definitely have this again.

750 ml bottle. This gets some pretty low scores, but I really liked it. Sweet aromas with touches of tartness that started us wondering if it might be a sour ale. Flavor was also sweet however, with some spice on the finish. Passion Fruit flavors were problally the Hawthorne Fruit. But I have never had a Hawthorne Fruit, so I am not sure. Pretty good stuff.

$12.49 for a big bottle at Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville, VA. Cloudy golden-orange w/ 2" of white head. Lotsa bubbles. White grape and banana in the nose. Flavor is alcohol, white grape juice. Bittersweet. Finishes with an odd linger.

Mostly clear dark yellow with a minuscule white head. The aroma is candy malt. The flavor is sweet with a slight anise-like acidic aftertaste. Reminds me of a gruit in some ways.Gassy. Pleasant and a bit different.

Bottle. Malt smells of very light grain, light herbs for the hops and light earth for the yeast, with grape, apple and white wine in the background. Head is small frothy white, with no lacing and is fully diminishing. Flavor is moderately sweet and lightly acidic to start, and moderately sweet, lightly acidic and a little sour to finish. Palate is light to medium, watery and has a lively carbonation. A unique mix of fruity flavors and aromas, but not my type of beer.

Clear medium straw colored pour, two finger thick bubbly white head. Nose is light spice and grapes, very sweet. Light bodied with very active carbonation. Grape juice certainly comes through in the flavor, as does some sweet caramel-like notes. Flavor is almost champagne like. A bit of orange starts to come through as it warms.

Hazy yellow-orange. Vinous nose. Spritzy carbonation in the middle; somewhat cloying in the finish and aftertaste. Delicate notes of honey, white wine, grapes, apples, pears, herbs and flowers. Interesting aromas from the unique adjuncts (nice amounts; nothing too overpowering or overdone). Nice balance. Pleasant and interesting beverage.
