Commercial Description:
Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

Interesting flavor, not terribly compelling though. Smells like rice on the aroma, purs to a very light a golden color. Tastes of honey but little else. Definitely a different sort of flavor, but too expensive.

(bottle - 750 ml) Clear golden color with a fizzy white head. Aroma is very dry and tart. Reminiscent of a good cider or chardonnay. Some sweetness from the grapes and some other unknown fruit (possibly the hawthorn). Flavor begins with an incredibly complex sweetness. There’s a mixture of sweet malts and a lot of grape juice. Middle is slightly grainy, probably from the rice, and a lightly dry and crisp finish. Very warming on the way down. Quite an interesting beer.

I would like to put out the disclaimer that I did not appreciate this at all, and that I don;t respect it for its uniqueness. The pour filled the glass with a mess large particulates suspended in a hazy apricott liquid that produced a quickly fading head with no residual foam nor lacing. The nose is similar to a pinot gris muddied up with apple funk, barnyard filth and a sweet smell I can most closely relate to gummy bears. The cider-like, white wine and honey flavours were destroyed by a massive amount of funk and no acidity to back it up, making the beer resember super-sweet vomit, if that’s even possible. The finish is also painfully sweet and again lacks acidity or bitterness, making it cloying. Very one dimentional. The carbonation is too soft and none of the flavours are bright or vibrant; they are dull. The finish is long and needs to be washed out with water.

Pours a large particulated golden colour witha small white head. Aroma of dry white wine, apple cidar, and alcohol. Initial taste is sweet with apples, spices, pitted fruits. Cidar also lingers in the background. Finishing with a nice bitter sweet hop finish. Minor head retention and lacing of the glass. Medium body and dry finish. Interesting brew.

the appearance is very clear with some particulate matter in it, there is also no head. the aroma is like a white wine and cider blend with apple, trace hints of lemon, spice, and honey. the initial flavor is very tangy with hints of honey and there is a funk on the sides of you mouth. the palate has a lemon and funk on the sid walls of your mouth which last for a while.

This didn’t stink but it wasn’t anything I’d have again. Cloudy yellow body beneath a champaign type fizzy head that evaporates quickly. Faint notes of grape skins, honey, and something I guess is hawthorne fruit. The flavor was semi-sweet, fizzy, and dry. I like that Dogfish Head tries these unique things with some historical background, like Midas Touch. This one just didn’t leave any significant impression.

What a thick syrupy looking muddy drink. Cloudy orange with big white head. I definitely did not anticipate the slight funk and yeast aroma. Incredibly full bodied and the honey and citrus fruit flavors come through big.
