Commercial Description:
Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

Cloudy, dirty yellow. Nose full of grapes and light fruit, flavor has hints of sweet white wine, good tartness, some lemon. Different.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden with a small short lived white head that leaves no lacing. Aroma of sweet muscat grapes, malt, and honey. Taste is the same as aroma with a hint of sweet tarts. Medium mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness. A little weird but good.

Thanks to Sombeast for opening this! Poured lightly hazy medium apple juice yellow with a short cap of white head. The aroma picked up sweet apple and white grape juices, some grape meat, phenols, some berries, and honey.. really odd assortment of smells, but I rather enjoyed it. The flavor was a bit messy.. there was an odd sweet/sour contrast throughout the drink (grape juice, honey, and herbal notes on the sweeter side and floral bitters, grape skins, pineapple, and boozy notes in the sharp department).. also sharp on the finish. Medium-ish bodied with a long finish.. transitions weren’t very good. Interesting brew.

Cloudy orange with good, creamy white head / Champagne-like nose of white grapes and stone fruit / Medium body with fine, delicate carbonation and crisp finish / Flavors of white grapes, apples, malt, and hawthorn fruit (?), with moderately sweet honeyed finish / If you’re drinking beer, but really want wine, here it is. Loosely comparable to a muscat wine.

Thanks Jason. The beer pours to a murky pine/straw colored body with some white chunks floating in it. A thin wispy white head. The aroma is fruity, honey, honeysuckle, light white grape juice. The flavors are soft and rounded. Buttery malts, light white grape juice, honey and something I’ve never tasted before that I can only assume is hawthorn fruit. The palate is soft, light, and sweet.

Pours a thickly clouded gold that gives a small amount of white head off a very aggressive pour. Nose is like sugar, fruit, mild honey, and grapes. Flavor is really odd and unique. Sweet. Tangy. Definite muscat grapes there. Heavily influence a lot of the flavor and feel. Speaking of feel. It is thick with a syrupy attribute. Falls off on the edge and leaves a wateryending feel but with a somewhat lasting syrup edge on the tongue. Definitely drinkable. Might be a bit too unique for a few, but overall definitely worth taking a shot at.

Smell is fruity (grape slightly passion fruitlike). Taste is hard to determine. The combonation of flavors does not smell to work well together.
