Commercial Description:
Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

Bottle (750ml) shared at ’Biegaman’s Summer Gathering’ -- courtesy of crwills. Deep yellow, small white head. Mild aroma featuring honey. Wow, so flavourful! Floral, fruity, sweet - really nice! Tons of honey sweetness, some spices and alcohol. Interesting!

Odd aroma. Sweet with a twang. Not sure what the twang is. Sweet taste with, surprise, a twang. Sweet and sour. Like a sauce. Like sweet and sour sauce. Sweet and sour like sweet and sour sauce. Hmmmmm. I’m sensing a pattern. The finish is sweet and...you get the idea.

Bottle (750ml) shared at ’Biegaman’s Summer Gathering’ -- courtesy of crwills. Pours a cloudy yellow-orange with a small white head. Aroma’s sweet and yeasty along with honey, fruit (grapes) and light spices. Flavour of honey foremost followed by various fruit (grapes, citrus and more), caramel malt and some spices -- it’s difficult to describe, like mead meets white wine? Medium bodied. Well it’s definitely different and interesting, and even though it’s not something I’d be likely to get again, I did enjoy trying it.

A funny citrus aroma with honey. An odd beer with lots of honey characters, which I usually don’t like in beer. One recreation I could do without.

Bottle from shigadeyo! Thanks!!! This way exceeded my expectations! Bottled 8/29/06 750ml bottle; Very cloudy light copper color with a medium white head; Nose of light spices, honey and fruitiness; flavor was fruity, sweet, kind of mead-like wit a fairly thick body. Quite an interesting beer, i could drink this one as a daily brew if I could get it!

Super cloudy golden coloured body with a very thin white head. Aroma of hops, alcohol, malt, figs, bananas and more sugar. Full-bodied; Strong honey flavour tucked within alcoholic and malty kicks and showing a raisiny sweetness. Overall, a good flavour and strong as hell beer. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 19-May-2007 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
