Commercial Description:
Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

Courtesy of JK. Cloudy yellow color with no head. Orange aroma with slight cloves. Id’ have to describe this as taste very vegetable-like. Slightly sour with a bit of coriander on the finish. Interesting.

Cloudy peach color (iced tea that is) no real lasting foam...never tasted Hawthorne but i would imagine thats the smell of sweet fruit that I get...mouth feel creamy and light, love it!...great with tex mex style grub...balanced very well...the honey is in no way overbearing to the overall concoction

This does smell and taste mor elike a meade. It has heavy notes of honey on the mouthfeel and finish. The layers of complexity show sweetness, fruit, and raison like flavors. A fiun beer!

From a big bottle. Poured a slightly hazy golden yellow color. Head was effervescent, white, and sank to a thin film over a period of a minute or two. Fresh cereal grain, pear, and honey aromas rose from the glass. Also smelled of buttered pancakes from time to time. Sweet and bubbly on the tongue with fruity apple/pear up front. The fruitiness mixes well with a malty cereal grain note toward the middle along with a touch of white wine. Reminds me of a strong cider almost. Defintiely gets some points for creativity.

Bottle sampled on 3/23/07: Pours a cloudy orange bronze with a thin, spotty-lacing wispy white head. Aroma of sweet pale malt with some floral notes and slightly earthy complexity. Body starts fairly full with a nice, light caramel malty sweetness, a touch of soft fruit and a slightly earthy, warming floral finish. An interesting brew.

From a 750ml bottle. Coming off of a wine-tasting, so my nose is a little off, but here it goes... Poured a bright amber-pink with bright white, quickly dissipating head. If I didn’t know better, I’d say that this was a Magner’s cider with that pink hue. Looks just like it. Aroma is low-key-- just a hint of malt. Flavor is relatively uncomplicated. Malty, perhaps a bit cloying, some hop bitterness, and an unidentifiable spicyness. Slight lingering bitterness, but in general, this brew has a weak finish. Bit of a coffee-like acidity in the finish, there, too. Effervescence resembles a Belgian abby ale. In short, not bad, but remarkable only in the fact that it possesses a weird combination of traits. A little disappointing for a Dogfish Head.
