Commercial Description:
Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

Sampled at the Knoxville tasting courtesy of Suttree, thanks Phil. Pours out a light yellow color with not much of a head. Smell is honey, lemon, some fruity esters. Taste is sweet and kind of malty, honey, lemon, meh.. not that great. It was drinkable, but thank god this bottle was split up. Wins the award for about the most unique beer here.

Lemon and honey. That’s pretty much what yer getting here. Some sweet honey flavors, and then some tart lemon notes. Not that that is a bad thing, of course, but thats what you’ve got. Lemon. And Honey.

750 mL bottle. Pours sparkling yellow wtih a small fizzy white head, mostly diminishing, spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (grain, meal), average hops (flowers, herbs), average yeast (sweat) with notes of grape, pear and honey. Medium bodied, oily texture, average duration and a metallic finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, acidity and bitterness.

Tap at Barcade: Pours a hazy bright yellow, topped by a thin white sheet of head. Simple, and funky aroma. Some mild, medicinal like lemony fruityness, herbal notes, phenols, and armpit. Flavor is somewhat interesting. Viscous sweet fruityness of sweet muscat grapes, and light apricot. There’s a later mild, but sharp acidity which helps balance out the fruity notes, yet they still seem a drop syrupy. Some mild herbal/floral elements as well. Slightly vinous, remeniscent of a sweet white wine. Finish is mild and soft. Interesting flavor, and easy drinking, not bad.

Nice fruitiness in the mouth. Somewhat warming, and fresh in flavour. I enjoyed this, and will grab one to have another LPR in the cellar.
