Commercial Description:
Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

(25.6oz bottle): Pours a golden light yellow coudy color, some smallish white head. Small bubbles. Light floral, malty aroma., grapes, alcohol. Nice floral taste, sweet grape, malts. Interesing flavor.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle dated 8/29/06 into a pint glass. Poured hazy, with significant sediment, golden in color. Minimal head created very thin lacing. The aroma had a floral hint with the addition of honey and fruit. I was a bit surprised with the flavor. I did not think I would enjoy a 9000 yr old recipe. This would not be a regular member of my rotation but I commend Dogfish Head on their willingness to try almost anything.

From a capped 750 ml. bottle with a bottled on date on the shoulder of bottle, 08.29.06, blurb along right side of label, sampled a cellar temperature in a pint glass. Poured a hazy, with sediment, golden hued orange with a small foamy, bubbly topped white head that settled into a thin lacing, minimal amount of sticking. Aromas of honey, grapes and tropical fruits, herbal, a sweet floral and light whiffs of spicy alcohol. Moderate carbonation and a crisp, dryish, smooth medium bodied mouthfeel. Pleasant taste, lightly tart, peach and grapes, a tart tropical fruitiness, herbs, a pinch of white sugar, an underlining sweet malts, spicy, pepper alcohol that softly burns on the tongue, and a dry, sour fruity, malty finish. Another nice unique beer from Dogfish Head, a velvety drinkability, well worth a try.

Bottle. Nose-white grape, fresh cut flowers, sweetness, and spiky honey. Body-hazy with a thick ring of bubbles. Taste-strawberry, light medicinal flavor, cardboard, floral, sweet, sticky, white grape juice, very fruity and stale, honey, canned corn water, plum. There is an overall staleness/dustiness that isn’t nice.

WTF is Hawthorn Fruit anyway???? Cloudy gold w/ no head. Smells like apple juice. This flavor combo doesn’t work for me at all, same as Midas Touch didn’t, so it must be the grape thing. Can’t believe I wasted $13 on this brew that’s headed for the drain. Sort of harsh on the tongue too.

750ML bottle 8/28/06. Pours a hazy, luminous tan with a medium white head with good retention. The aroma is not exciting. Much alcohol and little other character besides a vinegary fruit note can be detected. Flavor is a pleseant surprise. There is a honey sweetness followed by a complex fruit blast consisting of notes of grapes, apples, strawberries, and peaches. All of this is complemented by a dryness that balances the sweetness like a very good champange. The mouthfeel is potentially the best part. Feels like heavy cream with a slight, yet perfect amount of carbonation. Overall a very interesting beer. Fun to look at what beer was like 9,000 years ago.

Well, this one is unique to say the least. Pours a cloudy golden orange color with a fast head. Strangely fruity aroma that revealed melon (cantaloupe, watermelon), kiwi and green apple. Flavor was rather sweet, with a spicy middle and the sweets return at the finish. A fruity quality remains throughout. A touch of honey surfaces if you analyze the aftertaste. Vinous like a sweet white wine, but perhaps more drinkable than Midas Touch. Pretty full palate.

750 ml bottle poured a cloudy honey color with a lasting off white head. Aromas of honey, fruitiness and spice. Palate was light to medium bodied. Flavors of bread, apples, hints of honey and grapes and spice with a lingering bittersweet finish. Smells much better than it tastes!
