Commercial Description:
Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

Pours with a cloudy, yellow-orange body topped by a medium thick head with some lacing. It’s slightly sweet and malty with a nice fruity note and a little grassiness, as well as, a very slight hint of spice and flowers. Light bodied, smooth and a touch dry.

(Bottle) Shared at the PNW Christmas Party at Oakes in Vancouver on December 9th. Dubbed the "jihad" which got Sham into a frenzy. Pours a cloudy deep yellow with a dissipated white head. Nose of peppery flowers, sweet mild candy. Hard to explain - sweet and unsanitary. Alligator breath even.

Pours a gorgeous honey color. While not much head is formed during the pour, the absolutely delicious color makes this one irresistably attractive and gets a rare perfect 5 from me. Strong notes of honey in the aroma along with a bit of peachiness. Wonderfully complex flavor is almost grassy at first before transforming into a wonderful honey sweet beverage with hints of peaches, green and red grape, with a bit of a yeasty finish. A fantastic experiment with a fantastic result. Good work Dogfish brewers!

Bottle 2005. Hazy light orange body with a small creamy off-white head. Sweet fruit and light funk aroma. Sweet slightly tart flavor with some fruit citrus and almost a hint of cherry.

Found this one nearly undrinkable. I’m sure it was a hell of a time recreating an old beer, but this one was all sugars, muddle fruit aromas, and pepper. I’m not a fan of sake -- perhaps sake fans would enjoy it more.

2005 bottle -- Very nice initial pour, medium volume head with a nice cloudy golden/copper body. Taste was very nice, sweet fruits that almost reminded me of the Midas Touch, though there’s more tartness and sourness to this beer than that one. A very nice spicy ending.

0.75L bottle poured out slightly hazy straw color with bits of sediment. The white head readily dissipated to a thin white ring. There was sweet aroma of honey, sweet gapes, tart grapes and spice emanating from this fermented beverage. I really don’t smell any malt but upon further investigation I think I smell apples and flowers. The initial sip had a viscous mouth feel. Very fruity flavor with sweet and tart Granny Smith apples, grapes and sweet honey. There is also a spiciness that lightly permeates throughout.

This pours beautifully. It’s a hazy gold with a small fluffy head. Aroma is very much like a wine that finishes with a light spice of cinnamon. The flavor is sweet with honey and fruit. The carbonation is just right and leaves a pleasant tingle in the mouth as the flavor rests. This is very nice to drink and would go great with fruit and cheese.
